deferred loading

i am using windbg 6.4.

most of the time i find that the symbols of nt os kernel is not loaded
and the status is deferred. no matter what i do after that .reload,
.reload /f , .reload /f nt or even the absolute path of the symbols
they are not laoded.

i went inside the directory of the ntoskernl.dbg and found that the
symvol file was renamed to ntoskernl.db_

why was that done. I renamed it back, still nothing.

also i find that my break points are gone, though i set them using the
bu command!!!

I would suggest you fall back to the 6.3 version of WinDbg. 6.4 and 6.5 have
injected more problems than they fixed.

Gary,

I have to partially disagree, even though I use 6.2.13 as my primary
debugger. I keep around the latest WinDBG for several reasons:

1. The latest WinDBG has the latest !analyze which will help you with those
nasty crashes.

2. The latest WinDBG has the best support for 1394 debugging, which is a
joy to use because of its speed.

3. The most important reason, if we don’t try the latest BAG and give
useable feedback to the developers, how are we ever going to get out this
mess.

The latest WinDBG is poor, it is not as poor as it was when the new user
interface came out. At that time using the new bag resulted in my locking
my development system at least once an hour, the only way to unlock it was
hit the power loosing my work! I still don’t like the floating
windows/frame model, since I find it hard to use on a single monitor and
impossible on a notebook. I also find the reliability of 6.2.13 to exceed
the later versions.

I honestly believe the WinDBG team is trying to address the problems, and
make the newest bag a solid reliable tool. If we the community do not give
them useable feedback, then we are as much to blame for the problems as the
developers themselves.

Can you send the output of:

Regarding the breakpoints disappearing, are they disappearing in the
same debugger session, or they’re not restoring properly when reloading
windbg?

No unloaded module list present

At times, all seem to work properly, and symbols get loaded
automatically, but at others, despite all my attempts I can never get
them to load.

The symbol paths are

c:\winnt\symbols;SRV*c:\tmp*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols;C:\DRV\symbols

and my machine has downloaded the symbols from the server as well.

- Developer

Here’s the error that matters to you:
DBGHELP: c:\tmp\ntoskrnl.dbg\384D9B17190900\ntoskrnl.dbg -
mismatched timestamp

Can you try deleting that file and triggering a re-download (‘.reload /f
nt’)? And send along the !sym noisy info while the re-download is
occurring.

Jason

At times, all seem to work properly, and symbols get loaded
automatically, but at others, despite all my attempts I can never get
them to load.

The symbol paths are

c:\winnt\symbols;SRV*c:\tmp*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols;C
:\DRV\symbols

and my machine has downloaded the symbols from the server as well.

I have no doubt that the team is trying to address the issues that have been reported. Jason was very responsive to my pleas last week and did aid in getting some progress in using 6.5 with the checked build. I fell back to 6.3 after I had spent several wasted hours trying load and resolve breakpoints and new builds simply because something was broken in the way 6.5 was handling symbols. My procedures are based around “reload”, and frankly, from what I have seen, reload either does not work in 6.5, or it has changed and the new functionality has not been documented. To use 6.5 that will have to change to what Mark suggested, but I have not had time to implement that just so I can use 6.5. All of this was at the end of a very frustrating week of dealing with broken hardware and then having to deal with a broken debugger, with a great deal of the brokenness overlapping.

The point is that work has to be done, and the latest releases of the debugger are more of a hindrance than a help. I’ll use 6.5 for the enhanced features, on a case by case bases, and I am more than willing to use it to provide the WinDbg team diagnostic information. But like you, I now use 6.3 when I have to get some work done. Oh and 1394 does me absolutely no good at all, since no version of the debugger that I have seen likes my targets DLink 1394 controller.

same debugger session, or they’re not restoring properly when reloading
windbg?

Well, they disappear in the next session, I haven’t found them vanishing in
the same one yet.

Jason,

Does WinDbg use the settings of IE to download symbols? If so then there
might be a problem, I don’t use IE and so it might not be configured
properly. Though I can browse trhe web pages ( I just checked), is there any
special DNS or other settings that need to be taken care of? We are behind a
firewall and running a squid proxy server.

Do you start your debug sessions with the same exact commandline?
Sometimes small differences cause different workspaces to be used.

Regarding the breakpoints disappearing, are they disappearing in the
same debugger session, or they’re not restoring properly when reloading
windbg?

Well, they disappear in the next session, I haven’t found them vanishing
in the same one yet.

i am using windbg 6.4.

most of the time i find that the symbols of nt os kernel is not loaded
and the status is deferred. no matter what i do after that .reload,
.reload /f , .reload /f nt or even the absolute path of the symbols
they are not laoded.

i went inside the directory of the ntoskernl.dbg and found that the
symvol file was renamed to ntoskernl.db_

why was that done. I renamed it back, still nothing.

also i find that my break points are gone, though i set them using the
bu command!!!

shortcut are
“C:\Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows\windbg.exe”
working directory is "C:\Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows"

That’s not the issue. The fact that you have a mismatched file in your
cache says that at some point in time, your internet connection
downloaded something (while possibly corrupted or the wrong file).
That’s why I’m suggesting you delete the file, and do another ‘.reload
/f’, and send out the !sym noisy info for that load. It should confirm
what piece has gone wrong, or fix the problem altogether.

Jason,

Does WinDbg use the settings of IE to download symbols? If so then there might be a problem, I don’t use IE and so it might not be configured properly. Though I can browse trhe web pages ( I just checked), is there any special DNS or other settings that need to be taken care of? We are behind a firewall and running a squid proxy server.

Can you try deleting that file and triggering a re-download (‘.reload /f
nt’)???And send along the !sym noisy info while the re-download is
occurring.

At times, all seem to work properly, and symbols get loaded
automatically, but at others, despite all my attempts I can never get
them to load.

The symbol paths are

c:\winnt\symbols;SRVc:\tmphttp://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols;C
:\DRV\symbols

and my machine has downloaded the symbols from the server as well.
