Debugging over FireWire Adapter ExpressCard

I have a laptop without any firewire ports inbuilt.

I have a firewire adapter express card (Firewire 400).

It’s a TI chip.
Here is the card -
http://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/FireWire/2-Port-ExpressCard-IEEE-1394-Firewire-Card~EC13942#dnlds

WinDbg is not able to connect to debugger.

On target I see host controller listed properly in device manager.
Which means it wasn’t claimed on target.

I have specifically mentioned it’s location on PCI bus as well using
/busparams option as well.

Am I missing something more here?

-Deepak

My understanding is that the firewire support is very fragile, because the
target debugger interface “goes for the bare metal” and if the firewire
port does not conform EXACTLY to the spec the debugger expects, it won’t
work.

You neglected to mention whether this laptop is a host or target machine,
which version of the OS you are running on the target, which OS you are
running on the host, and which version of widbg you are using. Omission
of any one of these specs makes it nearly impossible to suggest what might
be wrong; omission of all these points tends to cause people to ignore the
question as “unanswerable”.

Did you tried NET debugging, it’s great.

This is good to know, and I suspected that many of the problems have gone
away, but for all we know the OP could be running Win2K on the laptop,
which is the target machine, and a version of WinDbg that is two years
old. Hard to tell, since I don’t have PTP (Pychic Transfer Protocol)
implemented.

Ohh yeah I forgot to mention version of windows.

I have Windows 8 host and it’s the WinDbg that comes with latest and
greatest WDK (Software development kit).
Host machine has in built firewire port.

My target is the one on which I have plugged in ExpressCard.
Target is running Win7 32bit.

Danny,
AFAIK, Win7 has no public support for NET debugging.

Doron,
Same express card on same target machine imaged with Windows 8 works like
charm.

this might sound irrelevant, but I have seen problems with adaptec cards as
well in some cases. Further poking revealed the following:

between the 4 and 6 pin sockets…

host | Target
-------±--------
4 | 6 Works
6 | 6 Works
6 | 4 Doesn’t work
4 | 4 Didn’t try out

For best results try the 6 - 6 configuration.

hope this helps
