Well, if Girish already has that, no need to use a modem, right ? Just
connect to the crashed machine over the TCP/IP network, and run the debugger
remote. Then look at the crash dump file remotely, generate reports at the
host, upload a summary or the whole file. Then reboot the remote machine,
fix the problem remotely, and try again. Simple!
And for the record, I do not slight WinDbg. It’s a nice product, it does
things we don’t, just like we do things it doesn’t. I am a technical man and
hence I can’t control pricing issues, so it’s a nonissue to me. All I’m
trying to do is to tell you guys what we have, or will have in the short
term!
Alberto.

Oh gosh … GASP … “technically inferior” WinDbg already HAS that … at
least the boys at Microsoft just asked me to do exactly that to debunk a
problem I’ve been reporting.

Coming soon to a location near you! Give me a week or so, and we’ll have a
remote debugger over TCP/IP, it’s going to work even if your remote target
has crashed, as long as SoftIce is there. More (and don’t quote me on that
one
) I believe that target machines are covered by the host licence, so
you don’t pay any more to do remote debugging on any number of targets. Your
Sysadmin will maybe have a heart attack, but hey, do you care ?

Ever hear of a modem? They are funny little boxes that have a wire that
plugs into the phone jack and another one that plugs into your serial port,
oh and a third one that plugs into the AC wall plug-in. Make sure the serial
connection is NOT using the null modem required for local debugging (there’s
a modem in the line this time). Use the modem to auto dial the number, and
it then becomes a serial line after the connect takes place.
