Debugging Geographically far crashed NT system

Hello All,

Is it possible to debug(using WinDbg) the NT system, which is crashed and
Geographically far from here? If yes, let me know…

I would appreciate your responce…

Ever hear of a modem? They are funny little boxes that have a wire that
plugs into the phone jack and another one that plugs into your serial port,
oh and a third one that plugs into the AC wall plug-in. Make sure the serial
connection is NOT using the null modem required for local debugging (there’s
a modem in the line this time). Use the modem to auto dial the number, and
it then becomes a serial line after the connect takes place.

Coming soon to a location near you! Give me a week or so, and we’ll have a
remote debugger over TCP/IP, it’s going to work even if your remote target
has crashed, as long as SoftIce is there. More (and don’t quote me on that
one  ) I believe that target machines are covered by the host licence, so
you don’t pay any more to do remote debugging on any number of targets. Your
Sysadmin will maybe have a heart attack, but hey, do you care ?

RE: [ntdev] Debugging Geographically far crashed NT systemOr if you have Internet connection between the two places, use the .remote and .server commands to set up a session where you and the remote site can both share the debugger outputs. All this needs is a TCP/IP connection. Named pipes are also supported I think. However if any of you is behind the firewall forget it. It will work if both of you are behind a single firewall.

The other options are to use NetMeeting Desktop Sharing or VNC or Win2000 Terminal server. Too many options. Or just debug the memory.dmp file.

Hope this helps.

Alberto,

it seems as a good idea but usually the crashed machine hasn’t SI installed
 OK, it would help if the crash is reproducible. I’m not sure how to
force remote admin in another company to install SI on their machine. It
seems a huge security leak. Is remote protocol password protected? Is
communication encrypted? Is there a problem with licences for targets in
other company?

Thanks,

Michal

Right now, this is intended to be used in a development environment, and
it’s going to be relatively easy for a sysadmin to filter out our packets at
firewall level. We’re actively debating security issues as we speak, and
we’re aware of some of the potential problems; and it does help to hear from
people like you, who really have the handle on what’s going on in
development sites! This is a Beta 1, almost an Alpha really, so we still
have some ground to cover.

And in a development environment, it might be a good idea to install the
target component of SoftIce, or DriverStudio in remote machines under
development.

Alberto.

Oh gosh … GASP … “technically inferior” WinDbg already HAS that … at

For development it is OK. Please document ports you’re using (or is it
configurable?) to make filtering easier. Firewalls should be configured to
deny all but necessary but there are exceptions sometimes.

We’re actively debating security issues as we speak, and
we’re aware of some of the potential problems;

Yes, we provide security software and I’d feeling bad if force customer to
let machine open for whole Internet  I would appreciate password
protection, IP address restriction (only configured machines can connect)
and traffic encryption (key based on given password?). Also, man in the
middle attacks should be taken into account – encryption should solve it.
Seems I’m paranoid

and it does help to hear from
people like you, who really have the handle on what’s going on in

And in a development environment, it might be a good idea to install the

I already instructed our testers to do it when testing drivers. Hopefully it
doesn’t violate licence agreement if I am only one who really debug problems

Well, if Girish already has that, no need to use a modem, right ? Just
connect to the crashed machine over the TCP/IP network, and run the debugger
remote. Then look at the crash dump file remotely, generate reports at the
host, upload a summary or the whole file. Then reboot the remote machine,
fix the problem remotely, and try again. Simple!

And for the record, I do not slight WinDbg. It’s a nice product, it does
things we don’t, just like we do things it doesn’t. I am a technical man and
hence I can’t control pricing issues, so it’s a nonissue to me. All I’m
trying to do is to tell you guys what we have, or will have in the short
term!
