Checked XP running under Virtual PC

Slightly off topic, but if anyone knows, it will be in this newsgroup …

Are checked builds (specifically XP Kernel and HAL) supposed to work in
Virtual PC 2004? For a little while now, I have moved my filter test
environment to be a VM. And it works great. I have one machine running
edit/build/windbg and a VM running my test machine. And when it’s my laptop,
I can (and do) work anywhere.

That was until I wanted to run with the *checked* NTOSKRNL and HAL. So I got
those out of the SP1 download [aside - why is SP1 checked not included in
the MSDN DVD distribution?] and added a new BOOT.INI line to my VM. But
whenever I boot with that kernel, my VM crashes (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL) in
VMSRVC.

So, is there a known problem in this area? Do I need to use a real test
machine whenever I need to run a checked build? Or is there any known
work-around?

Brian

I have found that if you run the checked portions of a build, especially the
kernel, then you can NOT have the “Virtual Machine Additions” installed. If
you do then the system will crash on startup.

Thanks Pete. Yes - that was what I was seeing.
I’ll try without the VM additions.
