checked version of KMDF coinstaller (wdf01000)?

I am trying to install the KMDF toaster example on a WIN2K3 system. I
am running a checked version of the OS.

I’m getting the following message in \Windows\wdf01000Inst.log:

Wdf01000 Setup cannont update a checked (debug) system with a free
(retail) version of wdf01000, or vice versa.

Question: I can only see one version of the wdf01000 coinstaller. Is
there a checked version somewhere?? Can KMDF be used on a checked
version of an OS.

Thanks,

Stuart

The short answer is no, the kmdf coinstaller cannot run on a chk OS, you must be running a fre release of the OS. For v1.1 (I am pretty sure it made it in for this release), you can use the chk version of the coinstaller to install on a chk OS.

The long answer is that we use the same update technology that is used on windows update (WU). That installer code matches the flavor of the install with the OS (otherwise WU might offer you a fre build kernel patch on your chk OS and completely hose your system).

So that seems like it might mean that I could use a full checked build to
get the appropriate checked hal and kernel for a partial checked build.
Is the checked build updated in sync with the free build on
Windows/Microsoft Update, or do you only release some updates but not
others for the checked build?

I wasn’t asking about that. I was asking if the full checked build gets
all the same updates as the full free build. Does it?

If it does, then it wouldn’t be too difficult to avoid the issues I ran
into using a partial checked build where the free build bits were updated
while the checked stuff wasn’t, and eventually the checked stuff wouldn’t
work anymore. Until the next SP release, anyway. If the full checked
build gets all the same updates as the full free build, it’s just a matter
of keeping them updated in sync and copying any new hal/kernels over.
