Hi, I need to debug a driver. From Nagar’s book I read that I need a null modem serial cable. I don’t know what that is or where I can find it. What can I do?
I am not a native English speeker, therefore my understanding of English is
limited. I recall seeing a Farside cartoon that a guy grabbed
“Fee electron accelerator” and carried it away from a booth in some expo
simply because the instrument had a very visible sign saying “Free electron
accelerator”. I can only derive that the logic justification of taking the
“Fee electron accelerator” away is because the adjective “Free”, such as
“Free Lunch”, meaning the Lunch is free and you can have the lunch without
paying it. Using the same analogy, I assume null modem serial cable is a
cable for moden built without wire or other materials since null means void
or nothing. Therefore, relax and you don’t have to know anything or do
anything.
<\Joke>
Maybe you could take a look at DDK Driver document Development Tools and
most other sections. I, as confused as the Farside guy, do not know how
could someone start debug kernel mode driver without ever reading DDK
document.
:–)

It was funny the “Joke” tag like html.
I have read the DDK but it says things about RXD, TXD, GND, pins connectors and other things. And I don’t understand a bit. Meanwhile I’m using DebugView.

Have you ever ran a search on the web? Try it! They are sometimes called laplink serial cables. Read the instructions for Windbg as it describes what it is too.

Get a LapLink cable and/or Null serial modem cable from a HW store, and
follow the instruction of the Windbg.
Even if you are up in the Mount everest or deep into the Brazilian rain
forest, given the proper gear you can search the internet and find about
NULL cable.
During the dark (computer) age one had to make a Null serial cable, using a
sharp knife and a sharp brain. We really don’t need to do that anymore !!!

Or really? If one need to debug Windows CE 2.0 or early a couple of years
ago, one has to use a sharp knife, a solder gun, and very focused brain (not
necessary sharp one) to make a “null” IEEE-1284 (bidirectional parallel)
cable.
These days people are so spoiled by IEEE-1394 (XP only) and Ethernet cables
(CE.NET) and it is said M$ will even rollout USB for windbg. Nevertheless
null modem cable is still a must if one needs to help debug chip for those
hardware guys (most JTAG boundary scan is still drived through UART ).
Cheers.

Yep, I agree with you. But then MS provided that cable, if one was willing
to pay. Sure that was required because one pair of port was not enough the
way the serial debug primitives were built right into the krnl. But then
again HW guys were able to provide us that with what you said here. And then
there is other ways to do the debugging depending on what lvl of hw/krnl
software one is developing for …
But I thought this guy is really looking for a Null serial cable, Not a JTAG
or some kind of scope …

How do you suppose to use USB for debugging. I’m far not expert in USB technology, but I believe you cannot simply connect two computers with USB cable due to USB architecture.

What might be even more interesting is to install VMWare, which enables
you to run more than one OS in separate virtual machines on the same
physical machine. The VMWare architecture allows you to debug a
so-called guest operating system from within the host operating system,
all without cabling!
(and no, I don’t own any VMWare shares)

How will it be possible to run WinDbg over USB?
USB is electrically oriented. It has host and targets. The computer has only host, it cannot be a target.

I am not a native English speeker, therefore my understanding of English is limited. I recall seeing a Farside cartoon that a guy grabbed
“Fee electron accelerator” and carried it away from a booth in some expo simply because the instrument had a very visible sign saying “Free electron accelerator”. I can only derive that the logic justification of taking the “Fee electron accelerator” away is because the adjective “Free”, such as “Free Lunch”, meaning the Lunch is free and you can have the lunch without paying it. Using the same analogy, I assume null modem serial cable is a cable for moden built without wire or other materials since null means void or nothing. Therefore, relax and you don’t have to know anything or do anything.
<\Joke>
Maybe you could take a look at DDK Driver document Development Tools and most other sections. I, as confused as the Farside guy, do not know how could someone start debug kernel mode driver without ever reading DDK document.

What might be even more interesting is to install VMWare, which enables you to run more than one OS in separate virtual machines on the same physical machine. The VMWare architecture allows you to debug a so-called guest operating system from within the host operating system, all without cabling!
(and no, I don’t own any VMWare shares)

How do you suppose to use USB for debugging. I’m far not expert in USB technology, but I believe you cannot simply connect two computers with USB cable due to USB architecture.

Or really? If one need to debug Windows CE 2.0 or early a couple of years ago, one has to use a sharp knife, a solder gun, and very focused brain (not necessary sharp one) to make a “null” IEEE-1284 (bidirectional parallel) cable.
These days people are so spoiled by IEEE-1394 (XP only) and Ethernet cables (CE.NET) and it is said M$ will even rollout USB for windbg. Nevertheless null modem cable is still a must if one needs to help debug chip for those hardware guys (most JTAG boundary scan is still drived through UART ).
Cheers.

Even if you are up in the Mount everest or deep into the Brazilian rain forest, given the proper gear you can search the internet and find about NULL cable.
During the dark (computer) age one had to make a Null serial cable, using a sharp knife and a sharp brain. We really don’t need to do that anymore !!!

When I was attending WinHEC 2002 DDK track and debugger section, I heard
Microsoft Engineer mentioning this and they were doing this internally. It
is however possible to have a simple USB adapter to make one (possibly
target) PC behaves like device. Have you seen those USB network adapter that
makes USB cable looks like Ethernet cable?
Cheers.

Add a host/target bridge on the cable and it should work. I have never seen one and don’t particularly want to, but it should be possible. I think 1394 is better suited for this, if and when Microsoft gets their stack working.

I don’t profess to understand how NT/windbg will actually take advantage of
this BUT USB2.0 (and the EHCI controller interface) define a special debug
port - see http://www.usb.org/data/developers/events/devcon/john_keys.pdf
http: and
Appendix C of the EHCI spec. The presentation implies that you need a
special serial-to-USB dongle (presumably you just plug a regular windbg
serial cable into this).
