BINPLACE stopped working in DDK3790.1238

Hi,

I use binplace to place my WPP trace format files, binaries, private/public
symbols. I’m not using the binplacing rules in DDK. It’s invoked by a rule
in my own makefile.inc. It’s been working fine in various 3790 BETA until I
switched to 1238.

The binplace.exe in DDK3790.1238 complains that ‘SymSearch could not be
located in the dynamic library dbghelp.dll’. It doesn’t place any file for
me even though the build log reported 2 files had been placed.

Is there any significant change in binplace in the new DDK? Please note I
can’t even see the help by doing “binplace /?”

Thanks,
Calvin

Ok. Replacing the DLL solved the problem. But simply adding the windbg path
before windows\system32 doesn’t work. Binplace insists in using the dll in
the system32 directory, not the one in windbg. Isn’t DLL searched in the
order specified in the path environment variable? Or binplace always tries
to use the one shipped with the OS?

I would have to boot to safe mode and replace the
\systemroot\system32\dbghelp.dll – Thanks to the WFP-:frowning: Anyway, I got the
binplace working again.

Thanks,
Calvin

It can be because binplace.exe uses imagehlp.dll which in turn uses dbghelp.dll. Imagehlp is located in %systemroot%\system32 directory so dbghelp.dll copy there has precedence.

And I found out binplace in v1238 doesn’t seem to place public (stripped)
symbols no matter what I’d tried. Not even just cut’ paste the sample from
DDK doc. The same command works fine in any previous beta I’ve used.

The first version of driver specific PREfast doesn’t catch anything new in
my code but warns on calling functions with explicit NULL or 0 in parameter
by default. It seems bit overkill IMO.

I never had so many troubles switching to a new beta DDK.

It can be because binplace.exe uses imagehlp.dll which in turn uses
dbghelp.dll. Imagehlp is located in %systemroot%\system32 directory so
dbghelp.dll copy there has precedence.

Ian,

Thanks for your reply. Can you please tell me why the setenv.bat in this DDK
sets the NO_BROWSER_FILE=TRUE by default?

It took me sometime to get my BSC back-
