another newbie question

In order to write a file system minifilter or file system filter, do I
need the WDK or the IFS Kit?

Use the WDK. In years past there was the DDK and the IFS kit. With
Vista, the two
were merged into the WDK. The WDK is the newest and most up to date and
now includes the IFS kit (and it’s free).

I just ordered the IFS because Microsoft said that the IFS is a superset
of the WDK and has extras that the WDK does not that are specific to
file systems, which is what I need.

Any idea on why Microsoft still offers the IFS? And charges for it?

I can’t remember any specific differences other than about a dozen white
papers from OSR that
have been left out of the WDK. These white papers mostly dealt with
legacy drivers though.

I can’t remember what all is in the old IFS kit - I’ve been building
minifilters with the WDK for
that last year or so… From my understanding your needing to build a
minifilter - I would recommend
you try to cancel your order and just use the WDK and save yourself some
money…

As to why their still offering it - and charging for it; I wonder that
myself. Perhaps some else could
tackle that.

I think I’ll cancel the order. Thanks for the heads up!
