Most people on this group work for a living and do not do much open source
stuff. You will have a very hard time finding free kernel code worth a damn.
Even if I did write it myself, what difference does it make? I work for a
living. Well, let me correct that, I work, I do not make much of a living at
it

Well, reading seeing this discussion …
If you find an implementation of an algorithm,
that is trustworthy (Read: you consider it trustworthy),
what’s the problem with porting it to kernel mode ?

If the implementation is well written, it should not be a problem.
And everyone who wants to write a driver should be C-skilled
enough to make it.

I wrote DES encryption code long back. The code is freely available at http://www.intellectualheaven.com/default.asp?BH=projects
I think it should be easy to convert to kernel mode because almost all of it is pure C code without any library calls.
As for Windows kernel mode open source code, why not? I don’t believe in GPL but i believe in open source because open source is not about making money, its about sharing knowledge.

I agree. It should be straightforward to convert it to kernel mode. If
somebody gets it work in the future, please let this group know so we
can potentially leverage it.

hmmm. were you thinking of Linux when you said open source kernel code

then i guess you have a point. it’s well know that proprietary code

Windows is really faster in lots of usage scenarios, given the on-the-knee made
nature of Linux kernel. Things made better for Linux in 2000ies though, due to
lots of AIX stuff ported to Linux.

The latest news(blogs) I read on Yahoo ! is that we might even see something
like MS-Linux. May be there is a footprint of this in slashdot. The article
touts about better security of Linux ( btw, I dont vouch, and dont deny,
since I dont know ) and some ms servers are on the making to interop with
linux. Am I the only one seen such an article ?

Also intense growth and compition in the far east ( where PC sales are at or
above 30% annual growth ) makes something like that is more rational. Also
MS has a thin-windows for far east and cheaper …

So essentially none of us should be surprised if an MS-Linux comes to the
market and fights off some 20 to 30 different flavors of Linux ( a perfect
example of when we have more than one solution to a problem, none of them
might be even close desirable solution … ).

But Jamey’s point stand tall, if anyone need opensource go there dig it up
and use it. Here sharing deep knowledge goes on, and since some of the very
hardworking talented members’ work has been stolen and sold or published
under different faces what kind of respect someone should have about open
source ?

DDK, IFSK, ms sites, osr sites, w3d sites, Mark Roddy’s site and a whole
bunch of other sites, including some 20+ champions are feeding answers to
questions and it is not only sharing but also careing

The best I can think of is the following ( I change and interchange those
words, and I get my answer(s) )

An elder Cherokee Native American was teaching his grandchildren about life.
He said to them, “A fight is going on inside me…It is a terrible fight,
and it is between two wolves. One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow,
regret,
greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, pride and
superiority.
The other wolf stands for joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity,
humility, kindness,
benevolence, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.
This same fight is going on inside of you and every other person too.”

They thought about it for a minute and then one child asked his grandfather,
“Which wolf will win?” The old Cherokee simply replied…“The one I feed.”
