We need to communicate with a controller board, connected to the serial port, via a proprietary protocol. It forces us to sometimes reply to a byte sent from the controller by a byte of our own *very quickly*. The user mode COM API most probably will not guarantee this reliably. Is there a way to write a driver that plugs into Serial and handles this protocol? And what would its interface to the controlling app look like? If this were a parallel port, we easily could take over the hardware via the corresponding IOCTL’s, but there seems to be no similar interface for serial…?
