About SoftICE symbols

Hi,

I have used wnidbg for live debug until now, but now I am trying SoftICE.
Can I ask you about SoftICE4.0.5?

  1. How do I load symbols (dbg or pdb)?
    According to manual, I need to translate from debug build exe or dll to
    .NMS…
    Can’t I use dbg file? I want to use release build and dbg.

  2. If I can load symbols (dbg or pdb),
    How do I load these symbols without specifying certain file… Windbg can
    load all symbols under
    specified directory. But I don’t know how does SoftICE load all symbols
    under symbols directory…
    Or SoftICE can’t do that?

  3. Do you know good SoftICE mailing lists?

Hi, Kitase-san,

My name is Alberto Moreira. I’m one of the development managers
in the Compuware/Numega DriverStudio team.

In SoftICE you translate executables, not symbols. You use
Loader32 for that. NMS is not only a symbol format, you can also
pack your source code with it.

Also, you are using an ancient version of SoftICE. I’m not sure
which SoftICE release has been internationalized and made
available in Japan, but I’m pretty sure you can get hold of
DriverStudio 2.5 or maybe even 2.6, and that will give you the new
Loader32 which is a much better product: it has the concept of a
workspace, and you can set it up in many different ways to fit your
product’s directory structure.

Also, with the latest version of DriverStudio we are shipping a utility
that links to the Microsoft Symbol Server.

So, maybe you want to check with your local salesman, depending
on what kind of licence you have you may be able to easily
upgrade !
