802.11 Raw Packet Sniffer Required...

Hi all,

Does any one know a packet sniffer to capture raw 802.11 packets form the Wlan adapter.

i am using “Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2100 LAN 3B” wlan card in laptop.

i checked some sample/free sniffers which gave only ethernet emulated packets and not raw 802.11 packets…i.e. management frames, probe requests etc.

Plz suggest…

Thanks & regards,
Suraj

Hello,

Did you look at ethereal? I have used this for many sniffing/tests for
the network appliances that we have developed at my firm.

http://www.ethereal.com/

I’m sure it will work for you - very customizable and many many decode
functions.

There’s also a higher-end tool available that requires a special Wi-Fi
adapter that will sniff over the airwaves from AirMagnet.

http://www.airmagnet.com/products/laptop.htm

It’s not inexpensive (much less free like ethereal though), but it does
give you the 802.11 frames. They started out with a “sniffing” type
product but have repositioned themselves as more of a wireless network
management application now with intrusion prevention and troubleshooting
tools, etc.

You didn’t specify it to be for Windows, so I’ll recommend Kismet.

It’s by far the best free 802.11 sniffer available, but it’s only available
for *nix.

Wlan adapter.

Windows does not support this. So, such a sniffer can only be tied to a
particular hardware piece from the particular vendor.

Version 0.10.14 Ethereal has given 802.11 management frames in it’s
supported protocol list…

You need to select the option of installing winpcap 3.1 during the
ethereal installation…

Check out.

0.10.13 also lists 802.11 management frames, but can winpcap capture the
packets from the airwaves? I.e. once a miniport driver for a WiFi
adapter gets the packets from the radio, it converts them to look like
802.3 packets in NDIS. (see the link below)
