Well, got back from DevCon last week, after taking the 1394 debug class, and
tried to use it again. First I downloaded 6.03.0005.1. Then I double checked
that the 1394 adapter on the target is disabled. I also made sure the target
boots to I moved the cable to the “other” port on the target adapter.
Absolutely nothing.
I still hold firm … 1394 don’t work. At least not for me.
I had the same problem when trying to connect two laptops using a
PCMCIA/1394 card. It turned out that card required to the laptop to be
connected to the main power supply … it just would not run when running on
batteries. So to cut the story short … are you using a laptop by any
chance?

Yup, as a host … but so were they in Microsoft last week. My target is an
older Optiplex with a DLink dfb-A5.

I used a Dell with a Sitecom PCMCIA/FireWire PC card. I could not establish
a connection while my laptop was on battery only. Plugging in the lead
solved all problems.

a collegue of mine told me that such FireWire adapters can only be used on
the host, not the target(s). I guess it is because they are not available
during the boot phase.

I think I might tend to argue with him on that. On my system with /SOS set
in BOOT.INI, I see the drivers load before the IDE drivers. So they are
there in plenty of time, since the first debug breakpoint is not called
until the boot drivers are loaded.

Oh yeah … additional … it has worked on this set up. Remember I have
indicated at one point it worked about 15% of the time. But … I did
install Compuware’s Driverworks on this system and I do note that there was
a Numega 1394 driver installed at the same time. I do note that WinDbg 1394
has not worked since then, even though I have uninstalled DriverWorks.

I ran into similar problems using a Toshiba laptop about 18 months
ago. The problem was the result of the 1394 chipset not always being
initialized when the HAL was loaded. I worked with Microsoft to
isolate the problem and was provided a new HAL that fixed the problem.
Here is a link to the KB article where you can download the HAL fix to
see if it solves your problem.
330232 - FIX: 1394 Debugging Cannot Debug Drivers at Boot Time
When I first started using the 1394 WinDbg support I had results
similar to yours but after I got the initial problems worked out I’ve
been able to get 1394 working about a dozen other 1394 target machines
that all use $20 no-name 1394 PCI cards or have built in 1394
chipsets.
Good Luck,
…John

I don’t know for sure, but I believe that the “driver” for 1394 debugging is
actually hard-coded into the kernel, because the OHCI register-level
interface is standard (incidentally, just like serial ports, and NE2000
cards, which I seem to recall are or have been the other supported hardware
devices in situations like these). I believe this is necessary, because the
kernel could get into all kinds of deadlock badness if it had to call out to
an external driver to run debugging.
So, if your card isn’t plain-vanilla OHCI, or if it’s behind some
non-standard bridge that needs non-standard drivers (does such a thing
exist?) then that card will probably not work as a debug target.
