0x7E bug check installing checked 2k8 R2 w/SP1 x64

I’m just trying to install the checked build build of 2k8 R2 w/SP1 x64
from the DVD media. Shortly after “Starting Windows” I get a bug
check. Now it has been a while since I needed to install a checked
version of the OS. Is this typical these days? Am I seeing something
out of the ordinary? Do I need to have the kernel debugger attached
during install and if so what are the debug settings?

The hardware is an ASUS Z8PE-D12. Not exactly bleeding edge hardware.
I was expecting the install to just work. Silly me…

The board has a SATA DVD drive and a SATA HD attached. There is a
PCIe 1394 adapter in one slot.

Anyone have any ideas on what to try next?

Every day a new hassle…

TIA,
Robert.

Install the production version and add a boot option for the checked kernel/hal.

Install a retail build, then use the checked build install from Windows
with the appropriate debug switches to allow you to run Windbg during
the install. The bug checks are common unfortunately, in particular
there are a number ASSERT’s in the ACPI handling that seem to trip up
most machines.

Thanks Don. I know have the checked build running and it is finding
things that the retail build did not complain about. Serious bugs…

I owe ya…

Cheers,
Robert.
