Wow, thanks! About pen devices though, yes I agree that they don’t all act identically, but shouldn’t their differences in data be already abstracted into a uniform format once HIDclass passes its HID collection to Win32k (where I’m trying to get in between)?

Theoretically, yes. You do need to remember that if YOU have a great
idea for filtering pen and tablet events, then other people have the
same idea. You need to be able to handle the case where there are 4
filters doing what you are doing.
