Debugger link freezes during Fireware debug sessions

Hi All,

I have got 2 IEEE 1394 cards based on VIA 6306 chip.
With a 6-pin cable they seem to work, but frequently my debugging sessions
freeze and the target machine hangs trying to connect to the host.
I found that disconnecting the IEEE 1394 cable and connecting it again helps
to resynchronize the session and I am again able to break into the target
and after that the debugging session is OK until the next hang up.

This problem bothers me a lot.
So I wonder is the issue happens because of the Fireware cards/drivers are
buggy and unsuitable for WinDbg?
Or maybe there is some debugger settings that could help to work around the
problem?

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,
Valeriy Glushkov

We have heard reports from people that have had better luck with non-VIA
hardware. Do you have any non-VIA cards to try?

For some reason, IEEE1394 debugging using the VIA chips is very unreliable.
Buy boards based on the TI chipset. The OSR Online store sells these for a
reasonable price. I’m not associated with them, I’m just a happy customer.
I was using a VIA chipset, and WinDbg disconnected quite frequently. I
bought 4 of the boards from the OSR Online store, and I have never had to
restart WinDbg since then.

https://www.osronline.com/, click on Store on the left-hand side, choose
Hardware for Debugging.

Drew,

Yes, I have another machine with on-board 1394 port.
I’m going to try it instead of one of my VIA cards.

Arlie,

Thank you for the answer.

Yes, I know about the 1394 adapters recommended by OSR.
But I could not find such adapter at my place, that’s why the 2 VIA cards
were bought.

For the moment I’m trying one of the VIA cards inserted into another XP SP1
machine with other target NVidia AMD64 chipset with on-board 1394.
Currently it seems the problem has gone.

I guess the VIA cards could behave bad with the same peer device, but work
with other peer devices…
We’ll be playing with the setup to check whether the problem solved…

Best regards,
Valeriy Glushkov
