The NE2000 is based (originally) on the National Semiconductor NS8390
Ethernet Lan Adapter Chipset. Check out the datasheet for the DP8390D
(today’s equivalent) at http://www.national.com/ds/DP/DP8390D.pdf. This
should give you the basics.
