Firewire to USB cable for debugging

Is it possible to use a Firewire to USB cable for debugging a Windows 7 (32 bit) target machine (Firewire port) through a Windows 8 running laptop (USB port).Or it’s strictly Firewire to Firewire for debugging. There are no COM ports on the target motherboard. Since the target is Windows 7, I cannot use the Ethernet for debugging as support for it is from Windows 8 onward, please correct me if I’m wrong. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

You need firewire to firewire.

You don’t have many choices here. Either get a development system with a
free slot to plug a 1394 card into or install Win8 on the target.

That is somewhat unusual. Even if there isn’t a DB9 connector, there is
often an unpopulated UART header on the motherboard – even on little
development boards. In that case, it’s trivial to build up an adapter

Thanks Scott !!! Will search for another PC with a firewire port.

Cheers Tim, how silly of me. I should have mentioned there there is no free DB9 connector port. It’s currently occupied by a VGA cable to the monitor, I’m afraid.

Well, that’s a DB-15, not a DB-9…

But what I mean is that most motherboards have a 6-pin or 8-pin header
on the motherboard (2 rows of pins like jumpers) for a UART, where you
can attach a ribbon cable with a DB-9 connector. Even if they didn’t
provide you a DB-9 connector, there still may be a path to put one in.
