DVD on NT?

Slightly off-topic but relevant to MSDN subscribers (of which there are many
here) so:

I have a Dell laptop with an ATAPI CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive in it. I’d like to
move to getting MSDN on DVD but I can’t get NT to read any DVDs. I’ve read
that, driver-wise, the stock ATAPI driver should work with any DVD drive.
All you need to do is download a driver that can read the UDF file-system. I
got this freeware from Adaptec’s site. This didn’t make any difference
though and NT tries to mount the disc and then says the drive isn’t ready.
Any ideas? If it helps, when I use the SCSI Adapters control panel applet to
list the ATAPI devices, the drive is listed as a SAMSUNG CD-ROM SCR-2438.

Am I right that the stock NT will read the data DVDs, but will not play
video
ones without some additional software?

You don’t perchance have an ATAPI ZIP drive attached? On my system with
a Panasonic DVD and an 250Mb ZIP, I end up with the ZIP driver placing
itself in charge of the second IDE channel (with the DVD) after which
the DVD driver from Panasonic fails to load. Before adding the ZIP drive
it used to load OK. I haven’t got around to sorting it out yet (works as
a CD OK)
