Help: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

I get the above error (UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP) on my dual-processor
PIII system.

The exact message is:
*** STOP: 0x0000007F (0x0000000D, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x000000)
UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

Does anyone have any ideas? It started acting up on Wednesday with random
stops and exceptions. It corrupted my system installation so I’ve had to
reinstall W2K. This message is the one I get while trying to install W2K,
so I doubt it’s any of my special device drivers or hardware. I’ve already
replaced memory, disk controller(s) and cables. BTW, this happens when I
try to install Windows 2000. I’m about to try a different disk drive now.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg

I can’t really offer any help, but I did have a similar problem with one of
my previous PC’s. It wasn’t even multi-processor. I was never able to
figure out the root cause - it seemed most likely to happen during heavy
disk activity… I ended up scrapping the system since it was impossible to
get any work done on it! I always had a hunch that it was power-supply
related…

If you have VIA chipset and use IDE drives, try to examine following:
http://www.viahardware.com/686bfaq.shtm. I had something silimar (maybe the
same) with Apollo Pro133A chipset; unable to install w2k, NT4 random freeze
when IDE DMA is turned on but not problem with XP which contain the latest
version of VIA drivers.

RE: [ntdev] Help: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAPThanks for the suggestion. I
already checked and adjusted the power supply voltages this morning. They
had drifted and were a little low. It should also be noted that this
machine has been running for nearly 3 years without problems. It was
running Sunday. I went out of town on Monday and when I returned on
Wednesday, it was BSOD! I’m trying a different hard disk for the system
drive and see if that helps. After that, the only thing left is motherboard
and CPUs.

It’s the Intel 440BX chipset. The error appears to be random. I would tend
to discount underlying compatibility problems due to the fact this
configuration has run for nearly 3 years without problems. I’m leaning
heavily towards hardware failure now!

My PC wasn’t as old. It ran fine for more than 1.5 years and then bam! I
tried a lot of different things to fix it - I never replaced the drive, but
I did wipe it and reinstall everything… I can usually fix just about
anything but I gave up on this one. Of course, this error message seems
pretty general so it isn’t too likely that they’re related. I had a P3 -
550 with Intel chipset.

So, VIA has some special kind of drivers for IDE controller?

Yes, for XP: “VIA Bus Master IDE Controller” viaide.sys with funny copyright
“Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp. 2000-2005” (VIA believes to survive next 4
years :). It is listed together with atapi.sys and pciidex.sys (Driver
Details) and is rather small (4 kB). Also, imports only few routines:

HAL.dll
5A WRITE_PORT_ULONG
54 READ_PORT_ULONG

PCIIDEX.SYS
1 PciIdeXGetBusData
2 PciIdeXInitialize
3 PciIdeXSetBusData

Maybe somebody can explain how it works.

No, the system runs 24x7 whether I’m at work or not. It’s also on a very
hefty UPS.

The problem started while I was gone. I tried different hard drives and
removed all non essential boards and one of the CPUs. I have verified PS
voltages, CPU fans (2 on each CPU), CPU temps, etc. I’ve replaced the
memory and disk controllers. Nothing, nada! Nothing obvious. My next
components are MB and CPU(s). I really hate to do that too. I think I’m
just going to set that system aside and use my laptop. It’s a lot faster
anyway.

RE: [ntdev] Help: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAPBoth CPUs have dual fan
heatsinks with all 4 fans relatively new (less than 6 months old). The
temperature monitoring shows both CPUs rather cool. They show only about
90-95 degrees. This seems a bit odd, but within reasonable, I guess.

Perhaps I will replace the thermal pads between the heat sink and CPUs. We
do board repairs here, so I should be able to find some monkey grease
somewhere…

> years :). It is listed together with atapi.sys and pciidex.sys (Driver

Details) and is rather small (4 kB). Also, imports only few routines:

HAL.dll
5A WRITE_PORT_ULONG
54 READ_PORT_ULONG

PCIIDEX.SYS
1 PciIdeXGetBusData
2 PciIdeXInitialize
3 PciIdeXSetBusData

Maybe somebody can explain how it works.

ATAPI.SYS in w2k is like SCSIPORT. Another SCSIPORT, slightly patched.
The debugger shows stuff like atapi!SpProcessCompletedRequest or such, they even did not change the name prefixes.
PCIIDEX.SYS is like NT4 ATAPI.SYS
As about the minidrivers - IIRC they do the customized DMA support like the Linux IDE stuff does.
