Xp sp2 (all patches installed) slowdown issue

Folks,

This has nothing directly to do with drivers as such, I am simply curios.

We have windows XP desktops in the corporate domain out here at office. So
these machines are always turned on, we simply lock the desktops while going
away. I haev noticed this incident hapening on all PCs. SInce these machines
never aer rebooted I see them getting slower day by day. Most of us leave
applications open. And these applications (like dev studio and firefox) ae
open for days together. I observe that the page file size of these machines
are huge. *Typically we haev 1GB memory on them) and the page file size is
like 3Gbs after staying ‘on’ a couple of days. Even after all ofthose
applications were closed down the page file size didn’t decrease.

I assume due to huge page file sizees the machines become slower.

Can some one tell me why this happens. Why won’t he page fiel size decrease.
And in the first place why would they increase so much. For your information
the total memory required by thesee applications is NOT near even to 3 GBS.

The size of the page file does not increase without an administrator
directly changing it via control panel or the registry.

Please ignore my previous post. It makes no sense. Page files can
change dynamically, at least from a minimum to a maximum, and possibly
further. Although what you are saying still seems strange, and I think
you might mean page file usage. Are you saying that page file usage
(from Task Manager or otherwise) is reading something like 3GB? If so,
that is damn strange, a sign of one serious memory leak. But you also
say that memory requirements do no total 3GB; where are you getting that
from?

well,

. Are you saying that page file usage (from Task Manager or otherwise)

Yes from teh task manager.

.But you also say that memory requirements do no total 3GB; where are you
getting that from?

I simply add up the total memory shown for all processes in task manager
again.

Could be a memory leak, but we only run trusted apps on the machines, like
VS2005, perforce, windbg, office, outlook etc. One thign that is opensource
is firefox.

If you don’t have something leaking memory, perhaps this may have
something to do with the prefetching/caching schemes
used?

Look at the following key for example -

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\
CURRENT VERSION \EXPLORER\AlwaysUnloadDll *

???
