XP checked builds??

Okay, just curious has anyone found the checked build of XP Pro lately?

I just looked on MSDN for XP Pro and all I can find is the checked network
install of XP SP2. And that will only install on checked builds of XP Pro,
which is, of course, not available on MSDN, or anywhere I can find.

Interestingly enough, the checked build of XP Media Center Edition 2004
does seem to be available on MSDN??

I am sooo confused.

The check build of XP RTM *was* available from MSDN. I was NEVER able to find a copy outside of MSDN for download, and neither could Hector when he looked: http://www.osronline.com/article.cfm?id=259

You DO keep all those old MSDN disks, don’t you

Any chance the XP SP1A kit is a “full” checked kit, so you can start from there? That was available for download at one point, according to Hector’s above referenced memo.

Any reason you need a full checked build, and not just the checked kernel/hal??

Peter,

When Microsoft removed the original XP for licensing reasons, they
eliminated the ability for people who did not have Checked XP disks to get
the full environment. I’ve had multiple discussion on this and while some
folks at Redmond think it is bad, no one seems to be able to fix it. I can
think o things besides the kernel and HAL that are desirable out of the
checked build, but unfortunately, once XP SP2 came out there was no way to
get the fill checked anymore, unless you already had a disk.

I think it is no longer possible to get a copy of that build of XP.
That’s the bad news. Despair not, for there is some really good news -
you can STILL get that copy of “Windows XP 64 Bit Edition 2003 Itanium2”
you’ve desperately wanted and needed for so long. In Japanese. So
you’ve got that going for you, which is nice…

I haven’t looked in a while, but I believe that is essentially the case,
and I have vague memories involving the words ‘GOLD’ or maybe
‘SLIPSTREAMING.’ having something to do with this. Someone on this list
told me a while ago, but I don’t remember who or really what the deal
was, not that it really matters. Presumably this was not the reasoning,
but one could look at this and say that somebody apparently decided that
smart thing to do here was to remove one of the most valuable tools that
the developers who cause most of the system crashes have at their
disposal for the most common version of the operating system. Either
way, that’s the way it seems to have worked out.

When you run the install of the SP, does it extract before it fails? I
think it does, and if so, you could copy what you wanted and do a
partial checked build or more. That would be something, at least,
assuming that it works. I think the network setup will do this,
possibly with the aid of some switches. Or, would the Media Center (or
XP SP1A or Tablet, et. c.) version be good enough for your purposes, or
at least better than nothing? I don’t know what the differences are,
but it seems like they would be likely to be quite similar.

Good luck,

mm

Apparently it was Don who told me…

Well, you don’t have to resort to THAT. If you just want/need a few files, you can just use one of a variety of utilities that allows you to open the executable self-extracting archive file. We do this all the time to grab out the checked kernel/hal without having to do a complete install.

I haven’t checked the XP SP1A kit, I was gonna do that next when I realized
I could actually get what I wanted from the XPSP2 checked network install.
I wanted to get a couple of checked SP2 boot components as they offer some
debug info.

I just attempted to execute the SP2 checked exe on my target and it
extracted all of the files to a GUID dir on the root drive. At that point
it tried to run the install and realized it wasn’t on a checked XP Pro
system. It pops up an error dialog before cleaning up, which gives you a
chance to copy all of the extracted files whereever you want before you say
“ok”

And yes of course I keep all the old discs, I even keep old RC versions of
everything (I think there is danger of the earth rotating off axis due to
the added CD weight on this part of the globe.) I just didn’t have them
with me.

I would like to run the full checked build at some point though. Sometimes
having all checked stacks can catch things not in the kernel proper, albeit
very slow and painfully.

OK. That’s embarrassing. I can’t say that this idea ever crossed my mind.

I think any Windows SP has a command-line key to only extract and not install.
