I have recently “inherited” a Compaq 8000Z (AMD Athlon 64 3200) desktop. I
hope to use it for 64-bit driver development.
It comes with Windows XP 32-Bit installed (which is just fine).
However, I cannot get HP/Compaq to answer whether Windows XP 64-Bit Edition
(for extended systems) can be installed on the beast.
The answer that I get is the first-level tech support answer “HP does not
support Windows XP 64-Bit Edition on the Presario 8000Z system”. This is a
non-answer in my book. I know it will invalidate the warranty, etc. But it
doesn’t say whether XP64 can be installed (and supported by me…) on the
iron.
Anyone have any experiance with the 8000Z and XP 64-Bit?
TIA,
Thomas F. Divine
Our 64-bit and Visual SoftICE development manager tells us that both Windows
XP 64bit Edition SP1 Beta 1 (1069), and Windows Server 2003- 3790 SP1 Beta1
(1069) should work just fine on the box. We even have a nice driver
development package running on it !
Alberto.

Thanks, Alberto.
HP tech support has been really frustrating. I also got a Compaq 3070us
notebook (big sucker) that came with XP Home on it. Their tech support said
that upgrading to Windows XP Pro was “unsupported”. Nonsense!
I’ll unpack the beast and carry on.

For future reference, all the AMD64 based systems use the same HAL. And to
the best of my knowledge, there are no AMD64-based systems that won’t run
the S03 SP1 Beta software.
Of course, finding drivers for things like the network card and video card
might be a different question. I know the folks at AMD were talking at one
time about trying to put together a comprehensive list of the existing
64-bit drivers and where one could get them, but I don’t know what’s become
of that endeavor. If one of our AMD colleagues here on the list doesn’t read
this note and tell us, I’ll see what I can find out and post it back
here…

I had a consulting gig with a home business user to fix his HP machine.
He managed to get two viruses on it and I just reinstalled, installed a
hardware firewall/router and Norton Internet Security. I had to call HP
for the restore CDs that no one seems to ship any more. Got someone in
India who didn’t even know that Sprint was a phone company.

My experience with laptops and notebooks isn’t a happy one. I’ve bumped into
situations where yes, it runs XP or Win2003, but only the version that comes
with the machine: if you try to load an off-the-shelf Windows into it, the
machine stops working. My theory is that some of these machines have
hardware and bios that are borderline incompatible, so, they need special
boot drivers and maybe other tweaks to make the machine work. You try to
install a standard Windows CD, and bleagh, they barf !
Alberto.

x64 versions of NT work just fine on any AMD64 machine, as long as the
machine has the APIC interrupt controller enabled. Some laptop machines may
not. Some of those may have an option to enable it in the BIOS, which will
also disable some of the more agressive CPU power management features.
(This is not an architectural problem, but rather a current chipset choice.
Later chipsets may offer both features simultaneously.)
