win8 and Windbg

Hello,

  1. would the windbg from the win7 WDK not work at all with win8? When I try
using it for user land debugging it can’t find local variables, complains
that symbols don’t match etc, even though I know the symbols are correct.
  2. The download page has changed fro windbg. So now, I have to download and
install entire visual studio to get windbg up? Can’t I get a package that
works stand alone on win 8 (both for user and kernel mode)?

thanks
B

Don’t know for sure, but based the PDB file changes that they’ve been
talking about I wouldn’t expect the older debugger versions to work.

I obtained the Developer Preview version of WinDBG (6.2.8102) through the
Dev Preview WDK installation. No idea what the distribution story will be in
the future.

The old windbg could still work on WIN8 (as the debugger host as well as the debugged targets), just that no new features would show up.

For the symbols loading (symbols not match) and “no local variables”, please run the following debugger commands and copy/paste the output (assume that “foo.dll” is the image that you are working on, and this is the module that debugger complains “symbols not match” and “could not find locals”).

lmvm foo
.sympath
!sym noisy
.reload /f foo.dll
!lmi foo
!chksym foo

Yeah, that version of windbg seems to work fine.

I used newer windbg (6.13.xx, and 6.2.xx versions), but I found one problem
which forced me to downgrade windbg back to 6.11.0001.404.

Everytime when I break into the debugger and set a breakpoint in source
code, windbg can’t set it properly, because it didn’t load PDB file. Windbg
6.11 loads PDB file automatically when I break into the debugger. With newer
windbg versions, I had to force windbg to load it (“.reload /f /i
mydriver.sys”).
