WHQL requirement

Hi,

is there a list of driver types which must be WHQL certificated otherwise
you get warning msg box during installation? I mean, e.g. filesystem filters
don’t need this, NDIS drivers must have WHQL, etc. I’d like to ask about
these drivers: virtual storport miniport driver, keyboard filter and display
mirror driver. I think only keyboard filter can be installed without WHQL…
how come?

Thanks, Petr

The list keeps changing, the current one is at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg462990 and guess what
all file system filters have categories.

I think all drivers installed by INFs.

No I think not. You will not get a WHQL warning for a driver installed
using, for example,?InstallHinfSection. Doesn’t mean that the driver
will load (e.g. 64bit,) but no WHQL warning.

The warning dialog at installation happens with all PnP installations,
which means installations done via INF, as Max said. Drivers that can
be completely installed through the Service Manager and a couple of
registry keys don’t go through that check. That includes legacy drivers
and WDM filter drivers.
