When will "Windows NT filesystem Internels" be avaliable?

Any time frame on the release? Was the book updated any before it was
sent to press? Any details available would be very welcome.

MM

From what I know it has not been updated before it went to press, but there
will be an updated (or rewritten?) version available lateron.

Send a mail to the guys at OSR and ask them to notify you of the release. I
guess they’ll also let us know through this mailing list, right?

Oliver Schneider

Of course we will. From what I understand, the pages are at the printer
and we were just trying to get the cover artwork from the graphic
artist. After all, we can’t have an ugly book cover, now can we?

Well, I designed an ugly book cover but that one was nixed (a file
systems developer with his fingers in Illustrator can be a frightening
experience) by the marketing powers that be. And graphic artists are
not nearly as reliable as file systems people!

Oh, c’mon Tony, who really cares what the re-issued old bits look like?
Release the old one in paperback, perfect bound with a solid light blue
cover, and we’ll STILL all buy it. I doubt seriously that anyone who WANTS
the book cares much what it looks like - I’ve seen the original (many times)
and it’s no looker itself.

And at up to US$200 a copy for the orginal on Ebay, your pricing structure
is flexible, I’d say.

Dave,

I honestly agree - the whole process really IS out of my hands and I’m
trying to make light of it. But I shall certainly ensure that the
responsible parties are made aware of your feedback.

And, FYI, I was told recently that we’ll be charging $65 per copy (and
in case people think we’re profiteering on this I would note that we’ll
have to sell quite a few copies just to cover the cost of acquiring the
rights.)

I do believe this is something that will happen this month.

Lyndon,

Hey Arlie - Where is the pre-order link please? Thanks - Lyndon
I asked him the same question off list. Seems he mixed the FSD and the WDF
books  … i.e. there is no pre-order link for the FSD book.

Ok, a few people have asked me – Where did you pre-order the FSD book?!
And I must admit – I goofed. I pre-ordered OSR’s WDM book, NOT the FSD
book.

Sorry to get everyone excited, it was just a broken neuron.

Makes me feel better, since I was told last month that the marketing
folks had decided NOT to do a pre-order page for the book (while I
suspect we’ll sell 100 copies, the marketing people don’t seem to be so
certain, so I think they’re going to start with a smaller number and
then order more if/when they are needed.) But I figured they changed
their minds on the pre-order link. What do *I* know!?

The time of “on demand publishing” is pretty incredible because it makes
publishing something like this practical, even in small quantities (and
while $65 sounds like a lot, I think the cost to print them is a
significant chunk of that.)

Of course, the real goal here was to use the book as a base for a new
edition, not to make money on the sale of the old edition.

A bit off topic and definitely too late, but…

I have the original, but I’d certainly buy a searchable pdf of Nagar’s
book, even for $75.
[$75 does not sound like a lot, I paid $215 at amazon for a used original a
couple of years ago.]

Just download it online, that’s it.

Do you know if this will be possible?

Considering an *average* calculus, physics, or chemistry book costs
something like $120, and considering that millions of them are printed a
year, I think $65 is quite reasonable, and I plan on buying several copies.

After I bought it, I did find a scanned version on the web, but it’s not what I am looking for.

A lot of books are currently being sold just as PDFs or as a set of paper and an electronic copy,
and it is 100% legal.

4th ed of Mark’s bible, for example: about $45 for paper only or about $120 for paper plus e-copy plus w2k3s RK.

The key word here is “searchable”.

And hey, send me $75, I’ll send you the link to the bootlegged [non-seachable] PDF of Nagar:-)

Just for the record, I have forced the issue again - we got the art
files back from the graphic designer and I personally made all the
requisite changes to the cover (important things like r-in-a-circle
around “Windows”.) I also provided a graphic of the cover, so that the
sales team can put up an ordering page for the book once they are happy
taking orders for it.

When I asked how long the turn-around time would be, I was told two
weeks.

The printed copy of it will have the traditional search capabilities of
a physical book. And every reprint copy that you purchase helps fund
the forward revision of the text (which is a rather daunting task…)

Tony

Hell, I’d pay you $75 to scan your copy and send it too me… Never
mind the copyright holders…
After I bought it, I did find a scanned version on the web, but it’s not
what I am looking for.

A lot of books are currently being sold just as PDFs or as a set of
paper and an electronic copy,
and it is 100% legal.

4th ed of Mark’s bible, for example: about $45 for paper only or about
$120 for paper plus e-copy plus w2k3s RK.

The key word here is “searchable”.

And hey, send me $75, I’ll send you the link to the bootlegged
[non-seachable] PDF of Nagar:-)

I hesitate to post this since I think we all need to buy the hard copies to support a much needed update of the book. However, there is no point in supporting any illegal bootleg operations to get a searchable copy.

A searchable HTML version of “Windows NT filesystem Internels” is available online for free at netlibrary.com. You can’t download the version but as long as you have reasonably fast internet access the online version is sufficient.

I had to go the library to get my initial username and password, but this was at no cost. Of course, the site offers access to a great deal of other books as well.
