Microsoft offers a File Transfer Manager plug-in for Windows/MS Explorer
that *does* resume. See http://transfers.one.microsoft.com/FTM/

Have you actually tried to download it? When you click the link, it
will bring up the “Microsoft Download Manager” which does exactly what
you ask: interruptible and resumable transfers.

Well, my online life got a lot easier when Verizon fired up 15 Mbps
fiber-optic service in my neighborhood. Unfortunately, Microsoft is one
of the few Internet destinations that can feed me stuff fast enough to
saturate the pipe…

well a bit of exaggeration doesn’t hurt i thought

yes but it never brought down any do you wan to install ms dl mgr
and at the moment i went to the link Hagen provided in a reply above
installed FTM

and clicked the link (actually pasted the link that i had hoarded in
notepad in a new browser window INTERNET EXPLORER to be sure) from a
different pc

but it doesn’t look like FTM recognises that download as progressing

i grabbed a screenie
http://blufferisme.googlepages.com/tim.jpg

i cancelled it once too to check if i could restart from FTM but FTM
doesn’t hold any interrupted or suspended entries

don’t know will check it again in the pc where i want to download this

in the mean time if anyof you could hit me on the head with some
gotchas it would be helpful

thanks to both of you for replying back

Transfer Manager, or whatever it is called, is a consumate pain in the
balls. Try going to the Download page for MSDN subscriptions, and
taking the option that is something like “My Downloads.” I think that
there is a resume option. If you get TM running again, try clicking
“Options,” and on one of the tabs there is a checkbox to create an icon
for it on your desktop. I would check, except, strangely, I don’t where
TM is on my computer at the moment either.

I think it will automatically resume if it will see the previous uncomplete
file in the same location, at least it was so for me once or twice.

Check the file’s SHA1 hash after download in this case. To do this, find FCIV -
File Checksum Integrity Verifier - tool on MS’s site, it can calculate MD5 and
SHA1 hashes and maintain an XML database of them.

Hagen,

thanks for the screen shot

ill go to connect and give it a shot instead of pasting the link
probably it only recognises direct downloads maybe
not links pasted in new browser

also it seems the page to direct link has dissappeared from ms site
as of today though the downlaod link is still working behind the scenes

it was available when i saved the link and a google cache of the page
is still available like below

http://blufferisme.googlepages.com/msdnupdatedon3rd_april_versus_google.PNG

actually i wouldnt have bothered so much with dlmgr

i have access to a nix box with high speed
if this iso was less than 2gb i could have leeched it off there split
it into parts with lxsplit md5 summed the parts downlaoded locally all
those parts with pscp and
hj-joined it
but nix flavour and kernel and filesystem in that box are stuck with
2GB file Size Limit

i actually already have a ~2gb iso in there

ls -l 6000.16386.WDK_RTM.iso
-rw-r–r-- 1 users 2147483647 6000.16386.WDK_RTM.iso

thanks and regards
