I have read in several places that the three home versions of Vista do not
include VSS.
I have a consumer-based backup product that produces temporary shadows in
order to do its job. This would be a disaster for my product. Is there any
chance that the lack of VSS in these products just means they just pulled
persistent snapshots (like they did in XP SP2) and that my temporary ones
will still work?
If they remove all VSS from home versions then they are removing a feature
that already existed in XP SP2, which is a big step backwards. I didn’t
think Microsoft would do something to put me out of business like this.
Also, wouldn’t this cripple all decent backup software for all home users?
Non-crash-consistent backups are virtually useless.
Vista Ultimate has VSS for sure.

VSS is present in all versions of Vista client. Note that System
Restore in Vista is now based on Volume SnapShots and it does work even
on basic home systems.
