VMware and SoftICE (Was: RE: Disassembler question?)

Sorry guys, I forgot to mention it is on SMP machine. It definitely doesn’t
work:

Jul 09 20:32:19: vcpu-0| IRQBadVector: 2
Jul 09 20:32:19: vcpu-0| MONITOR PANIC: BUG F(171):60 bugNr=2293
Jul 09 20:32:19: vcpu-0| Core dump with build build-4460
Jul 09 20:32:19: vcpu-0| Writing monitor corefile
“E:\VMware\VMs\w2ksrv\vmware-core.gz”
Jul 09 20:32:19: vcpu-0| Setting vaddr to 0
Jul 09 20:32:20: vcpu-0| Writing anonymous pages at pos: 401000
Jul 09 20:32:22: vcpu-0| Msg_Post: Error
Jul 09 20:32:22: vcpu-0| [msg.log.monpanic] *** VMware Workstation internal
monitor error ***
Jul 09 20:32:22: vcpu-0| BUG F(171):60 bugNr=2293

I reported it severals years ago to VMware, they examined the problem, found
some clash on NMI and responded problem is too hard to solve. I hoped for
some cooperation between both companies; it isn’t something users should
solve, there is a conflict and developers should find the solution. Well,
maybe I can try to report it again to VMware.

BTW, I have no problem with SoftICE/VSI on guest NT and ported FS filter
from XP to w2k this way. But the situation on host side is a PITA.

Nick, Mihal,

Both 2.7 and 3.0 SoftICE releases should work with VMWare 4. But of course
this support has two sides, so, I suggest you check with VMWare too !

Alberto.

VMWare 4.0 does work with SoftIce, both on the host and on the guest OS.
Do a search on the ntdev archives for my posts on the topic (I also
explain how to get WinDbg working with a 3rd-party virtual serial port
emulator).

It did this for me on 3.0, but works on 4.0. Are you running 4.0?
