Vista RC1 checked build

I’d need USB drivers from checked build to debug remote wakeup problem. I downloaded ISO image and found it is standard installation and I don’t know the way how to extract individual files. So I have to install whole checked build first. I tried to install it to VMware VM but installation appears frozen when initial “Windows is loading files…” screen finished.

Does anybody know some way how to extract few checked build drivers? Or do I really need to burn the DVD and install whole checked build on some unlucky machine?

MICHAL:

I took me about three days to finally find it, but there is a tool
ImageX (or maybe it’s XImage) in the BDD (Business Desktop Deployment -
register for it at connect.microsoft.com) (and maybe other DevKits as
well). It is advertised as being in a bunch of things, but none of them
seem to really exist. In any case, somewhere along the way Don Burn
gave me some advice that I should have listened to: if you’re able to do
so, install it somewhere temporarily and keep the files you need. While
this is ridiculous, in the end it takes less time.

Martin,

I did following: cloned existing Vista RC1 VM (free build), started it and mounted checked build ISO image as CD drive (great VMware feature). Started setup from there and tried to install checked build to the second virtual drive. Initial phase was good, then it rebooted, did something with disks for a long time (screen was blank), rebooted several times and finally after about a hour, original Vista booted claiming the installation failed. The stupid thing made rollback and deleted all the files from secondary drive :-/ Fortunately, it left about 450 MB of files in the c:$WINDOWS.~BT directory and it seems there is complete set of drivers including USB. I’ll try them.

What seems strange are file sizes. There isn’t a big difference between free and checked build. It looks like checked build files are free build with debug messages. Free build files are much bigger than w2k3 and XP equivalents. For example usbhub.sys:

  • Vista RC1 free: 191 kB
  • Vista RC1 checked: 210 kB
  • w2k3 free: 54 kB
  • XP SP2 free: 57 kB
  • XP SP2 checked: 166 kB

It seems as RC1 free drivers (at least USB) are built with optimization turned off.

Martin,

I tried to download BDD and received big red message:

The system has encountered an unexpected error. We apologize for the inconvenience. The issue will be addressed as quickly as possible.

I guess it means I should finish for today

BTW, UAC in the Vista can be turned off if you aren’t aware. Also all the visual nonsense. This is the first thing I do after new build installation.

Some comments:

  1. Vista has had a history of wanting a clean partition to install on.
Though they claim to have fixed this, I still see problems on the checked
    build.

  2. The ImageX (it has been Ximage) tool is in the BDD and in the
Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) the latter is part of the standard
    Vista beta downloads on connect.

  3. At WinHEC I tried to point out the to folks responsible for
ImageX that it should be part of the OS or at least the DDK so that dev’s
could extract the needed checked files. If you care about this say it here,
maybe somebody will get a clue!

  4. As Martin has said the pain of using ImageX is such the easiest
thing is a clean install of Vista Checked, then grab the driver files.

MICHAL:

Yeah, it is the first thing I did as well. Group Policy editor has
long been a friend of mine. I just don’t like it as the first thing I
had to with Vista was figure out how disable most of its features.
BCDEDIT is another example that is much more complicated and really
doesn’t, at present, offer anything more than BOOT.INI as far as what I
need. It may someday, but until then, having to type GUIDs on the
command line is less than convenient.

I had no trouble with BDD, so all I can do is wish you the best of
luck. Actually, I think Don Burn told me about a different package that
contained it, but I stumbled across this one first, so he might be able
to help you.

Best of luck,

MM

ImageX that it should be part of the OS or at least the DDK so that

say it here, maybe somebody will get a clue!

They did, ImageX IS on the WDK disk. It’s under the DTM stuff (do a search
for imagex.exe).

Thanks! (couldn’t you tell it yesterday?

I don’t see why Don and Martin compain about it. I mounted the checked build install.wim to the directory and now all files are accesible using any file manager. That’s great and much faster than desperately trying to install checked build somewhere.

Just if somebody missed it: it is necessary to install winfltr.inf at first and then use imagex /mount command. It works even at Vista.

More than worthless since you can only install the DTM stuff on Windows
Server 2001 SP1. I’m sure everyone has that running on their development
workstation. If that isn’t bad enough, I know there was a study to allow a
WDK sans DTM, whether it will happen is another question.

I complained about it not because of imageX but because of the large amount
of stuff you needed to download to get it. Bottom line it was faster to
install the checked build that it was to download the WAIK and install it.
Now if they would just move the imageX stuff into the debug directory of the
WDK (where the checked hal and kernel already reside), so we don’t have to
fart around to get the correct pieces, or install the DTM!!!

You don’t need to install DTM. ImageX files are on the WDK DVD in the \osdeploy directory. I successfully mounted checked build image to the directory (ISO image mounted as virtual DVD and WIM file from the DVD mounted using ImageX).

No need to install DTM, just pull the ImageX directory off the WDK DVD and
use it.

JAN:

Is that only in the WinHEC version? Most people don’t have that.
Either way, I don’t see why the equivalent of “EXTRACT” should be so
hard to obtain.

I don’t know if ImageX was on the WinHEC version. It was on the July CTP
version, and assume it’s on the RC1 version.

There is also a driver you can install (on WXP/W2K3/Vista) that allows you
to mount the .wim image file as a drive letter. Michal just reported the
.wim file can be on a mounted .iso image.

I’ve been using ImageX for a month or two now, to keep a clean copy of the
OS available. The nice thing is you can create or restore a .wim image from
a command line, which means I can make automated test scripts that restore a
fresh copy of the OS.

About the only addition I would make would be a COM style interface to
ImageX, so I can write a script that just deals with an object instead of
having to spawn a process.

Additionally, it is worth to check out the OPK.
Besides of WinPE /WinRE, which are very handy by itself,
the OPK help files have information and examples of using ImageX
and mounting wim files.

I think the OPK proper has been replaced by something or other with a
gui interface and some other inscrutable stuff that along with the new
boot manager make me cringe. On the other hand they both are better than
DTM.
