MICHAL:
Yeah, it is the first thing I did as well. Group Policy editor has
long been a friend of mine. I just don’t like it as the first thing I
had to with Vista was figure out how disable most of its features.
BCDEDIT is another example that is much more complicated and really
doesn’t, at present, offer anything more than BOOT.INI as far as what I
need. It may someday, but until then, having to type GUIDs on the
command line is less than convenient.
I had no trouble with BDD, so all I can do is wish you the best of
luck. Actually, I think Don Burn told me about a different package that
contained it, but I stumbled across this one first, so he might be able
to help you.
Best of luck,
MM

Martin,
I tried to download BDD and received big red message:
The system has encountered an unexpected error. We apologize for the
inconvenience. The issue will be addressed as quickly as possible.
I guess it means I should finish for today
BTW, UAC in the Vista can be turned off if you aren’t aware. Also all
the visual nonsense. This is the first thing I do after new build
installation.
Best regards,

MICHAL:
I had noticed the same thing, but had not proceeded any further.
Personally, while I think Vista looks much, much better than
previous
versions, all of it’s features are just irritations to me. The
whole
running as a less previleged user, in combination with that
irritating
desktop switch drives me out of my mind.
Should that remnant folder not contain everything you need,
ImageX/XImage in the BDD does work, it is just really, really slow,
poorly documented and takes forever to download.
Best of luck,
MM

Martin,
I did following: cloned existing Vista RC1 VM (free build), started
it
and mounted checked build ISO image as CD drive (great VMware
feature).
Started setup from there and tried to install checked build to the
second virtual drive. Initial phase was good, then it rebooted, did
something with disks for a long time (screen was blank), rebooted
several times and finally after about a hour, original Vista booted
claiming the installation failed. The stupid thing made rollback and
deleted all the files from secondary drive :-/ Fortunately, it left
about 450 MB of files in the c:$WINDOWS.~BT directory and it seems
there is complete set of drivers including USB. I’ll try them.
What seems strange are file sizes. There isn’t a big difference
between
free and checked build. It looks like checked build files are free
build
with debug messages. Free build files are much bigger than w2k3 and
XP
equivalents. For example usbhub.sys:
- Vista RC1 free: 191 kB
- Vista RC1 checked: 210 kB
- w2k3 free: 54 kB
- XP SP2 free: 57 kB
- XP SP2 checked: 166 kB
It seems as RC1 free drivers (at least USB) are built with
optimization
turned off.
