Hi all,
Has anyone tried one of the usb-serial adapters to do any debugging with
WinDbg? Most of the laptops do not come with a serial port now a days so I
was wondering if this is a viable option?
By the way, I use 1394 and its great when it works but what about debugging
a target that is pre-XP? There are some applications for which a serial
connection might still be useful.
Anyway, what I am looking for here is positive or negative experience with
these adapters before I decide to pick one up for myself.

Avoid Belkin it’s junk. it would blue-screen my system.
I’ve since been using Hawking Tech Serial Adapter - USB, RS-232 - Serial -
230 Kbps - HUC232S,
which has signed drivers and have been much happier.
Good-luck.

They work fine if you use them as the debugging host com port. They don’t
work at all if you try to use them as the com port on the debugging
target.
I used one a long time ago, though I don’t remember what brand it was.
Sorry. It worked just fine, never had a problem. In fact, it had the
useful feature of having activity lights, so it was easy to see if the
serial connection was really busy or doing nothing, during those times the
debugger seemed confused. When it was doing nothing, that was usually a
sign that it needed a resync.

Thanks to both for sharing your experience. I ordered the Hawking adapter based on your recommendation.
