USB keyboard generated crushdump

Guys,

Has anyone gotten BSOD to happen from a USB keyboard on XP as described in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=244139 when the machine is completely
hung?

PS/2 keyboards work just fine every time, but I was never being able to get
an XP machine to BSOD when initiated from a USB keyboard.

Also, other than the crushdump PCI card, are there any other hardware
solutions that would work with generic PCs off of generally available ports
(USB/LPT/1394)?

Thanks,

Alex

If I recall correctly, it requires S2K3, a hotfix, and I don’t think that it will work in some
cases. In particular, the IRQL is lower priority than that of the PS/2 case, so depending on what’s
causing the hang, it may not be processed.

Good luck,

,

This might be what you mean, but there are NMI generating cards that will work for this purpose.
Also, some boards have NMI generation facilities built in - most SuperMicro boards, for example have
this capability.

Good luck,

Martin,

Thanks again. I was suspecting that problem. I also found this
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/sysinternals/dmpsw.mspx

It pretty much kills any chances of having an NMI switch on anything other
than ISA or PCI bus.

I am still open to suggestions on getting a crushdump on a completely hung
XP box with minimal hardware intervention.

Not a problem; unfortunately, I haven’t any ideas that don’t involve hardware, unless you happen to
be using a board with NMI support already in place.

Good luck,

if you have got any access to the machine when it is hung, i.e., if you
could access the shares \machinename\c$… Then you can download
Notmyfault.exe tool from the URL below and you can use PSEXEC.exe from
Sysinternals to remotely launch “notmyfault.exe /crash” which is copied to
the C$ of the affected machine in advance.

If you can’t break in with WinDbg, there’s no way that this will work.
