UMDF currently says “Vista only”. Is there some fundamental
technological reason for that, or is this just a testing issue? That
is, will it probably work but there are no promises and no support?

AFAIK User mode drivers were introduced in 1998 as part of one of
Galen Hunt’s research publications. The paper has described writing a user
mode driver with a proxy driver (no details though) and it also did give a
dead link to download the project

Peter Wieland can probably answer your post definitively, Tim. But, IIRC, there IS a technical reason… a piece of underlying plumbing that forms the basis for UMDF that’s needed, not present in Win2K, and a rather big job to backport to the Win2K executive.

Actually the XP beta of UMDF 1.0 should start “any day now” … where
“any day now” is metered by the standard logistical problems of getting
bits that we’ve been distributing within MS bundled together into a
coherent package for use externally, dotting all the t’s, crossing all
the i’s and that sort of thing.
Our intention is to release UMDF 1.0 for XP SP2+ later this year (likely
summer), with an update along with the Vista release (what we’re calling
UMDF 1.5 for now). Of course that’s all subject to change but at the
moment we’re on track for both.
To date we haven’t gotten enough demand to justify the development &
testing cost of supporting Win2k. The cost of doing so would be higher
than it was for KMDF since UMDF is more dependent on user-mode features
in the OS as well as some of the behaviors of the PNP system.

I'm told that our WDF beta program(s) have been merged with the WDK beta (still not sure why) - so if you go to http://www.connect.microsoft.com you can sign up for the WDK beta and we'll announce there when UMDF is available. I just posted an entry on my blog (Pointless Blathering | Microsoft Learn) with the steps for signing up for the WDK and downloading that.
I'll probably announce it here too.
The XP beta will be an add-on to the WDK beta, so you may as well start the 2GB download now
