UDMF Skeleton Build alternatively for Windows XP

I am preparing to write a UDMF Device Driver. I would
like to target XP. I would like to use the UDMF
Skeleton, however the Doco lists Vista for both the
target and the development environment. I have read
that UDMF drivers are for 2000 and later. Is there a
way I can use the Skeleton driver for XP?

Thanks,

Asher

What version of the WDK are you using? The documentation for the Vista
6000 RTM (the “official” one at the moment) describes installation on
XP, and says that you will use Vista build environment for targeting
both Vista/Longhorn as well as XP.

This can be confusing. There are some types of drivers/projects that
use BUILD that always use certain build environments; WinDbg extensions
are another example of this.

Good luck,

mm

UMDF is not supported on Windows 2000 but is supported on XP.

You use Vista build environment for building UMDF drivers for XP. You
can use set target version as XP in sources which is what UMDF samples
do.

So the skeleton driver you built should work fine on XP.

Praveen

Thanks Martin,

The Doco I have states otherwise, but it looks like
the Doco is dated.

Thanks again!

Pravin,

This is an interesting thing! I think it is correct,
but I am wondering why. I mean what difference will
the Vista build environment provide from the XP Build
environment?

Thank you,

Asher

PS It has a few of my collegues wondering as well.

The headers for UMDF aren’t in the XP build environment and we’ve never really tested it out. It’s not necessary since the Vista build environment will create XP drivers.
