In all of the years of NT development work, I have never seen this
dialog box.
“The system has detected tampering with your registered product type.
This is a violation of you license. Tampering with the product type in
not permitted.”
Any thoughts?

There’s a callback in the kernel that sits around and waits for
“innappropiate” access to one of the registry keys that tells NT if it’s a
server or client version (something like
Control\ProductionOptions\ProductType or Setup\SystemPrefix ). It denies
the acesses and pops that msg box when it’s triggered.
It’s been around since NT 4.0. dunno about before then.
