Does anybody know if file performance in and out of the Windows temp directory is any slower (or faster) then file performance in any other directory under Windows 98, Me, 2000 and beyond?
Thanks in advance.

AFAIK it is just another directory.

That’s what I thought until I started getting some WEIRD performance issues that went away when I stopped using the temp directory!?!

Try to check fragmentation.

Is it possible that your file system is fragmented in such a way that you
just happen to hit it when you use the “temp” directory? Just a thought.

It is possible to create a file with FILE_ATTRIBUTE_TEMPORARY, but it is not
possible to create a directory with this attribute.

You know…that may just have been it. I just defragged and I’ll try again
and see if the quirky performance issues go away…
Thanks.

Hope you have a good defragmenter which is able to defrag directories. The
tool included in w2k doesn’t have this feature (IMHO). If you haven’t, you
can try to delete temp directory, defrag and create new.
