Symbol load accleration

I am trying to debug and write my own printer drivers.

Now, every time I attach teh debugger to a process (say notepad), and click
on the print menu item, the print dialog box opens. I have a ot of printers
installed in the machine, and one of them is an HP based printer. So
ofcource teh symbols for it’s DLLs cannot be located. I get the modLoad
error Sybol cannot b located message. But it slows down my debugging
process, as it takes a long time to laod the printers list.

Can something be done so that Windbg, ignores these modules taht are not
important to me as of now?

The simplest thing to do would be to set your symbol path to an empty
local directory. This will make the symbol lookup failures very fast.
Then when you get to the point where you actually want to debug you can
change your symbol path and refresh with .sympath and .reload. You can
do .reload <image.ext> to limit the reload and symbol search to just a
single DLL if you want to optimize the refresh.

Thank you for the reply. i was wondering whether it is possible to have the
microsoft symbol server path active while masking off only certain module
symbol from being loaded.
say, in my case only the H.P. symbol would be masked off and not be searched
for

It appears the feature was not put in the debugger docs, but it is
there.

It is mentioned in the symhttp.doc in reference to how to use it with

symproxy. Still the basic gist of it is the same. The July release of

symsrv.dll is not tested to work with Visual Studio. You can try it if
you

want. Here is the text from symhttp.doc that describes the exclusion
list.

Create the symsrv.in file in the same directory that symsrv.dll exists

Exclusions

In some environments, you may find yourself debugging systems for which

there is a large quantity of modules loaded for which you cannot obtain

symbols. This is often the case if you have code that is called by
another

third-party vendor. This can result in a lot of failed attempts to grab

symbols. This can be time-consuming and clog up network resources. To

alleviate this situation, you can use an Exclusion List to specify
symbols

that you don’t want to search for. This feature exists in the client

debugger.

Alternately, you can configure the SymProxy filter to utilize its own
the

Exclusion List and prevent such network activity where it is most likely
to

take up resources.

The list is made up of the names of the files for which you want to
prevent

processing. The file names can contain wildcards. For example

dbghelp.pdb

symsrv.*

mso*

The list can be implemented in two ways. The first is an ini file,

%WINDIR%\system32\inetsrv\symsrv.ini. A section called “exclusions”
should

contain the list.

Alternately you can store the exclusions in the registry. Create a key

called HKLM\ Software\Microsoft\Symbol Server\Exclusions. Store the
file

name list as string values (REG_SZ) within this key. The name of the

can be used as a comment describing why the file is being excluded.

If the ini file exists, it will be used. Otherwise the registry is
checked.

SymProxy does not support the use of both symsrv.ini and the registry.

Simply add files to the list in the registry or ini file and wait a
short

period for the exclusions to be used.

I am trying to debug and write my own printer drivers.

Now, every time I attach teh debugger to a process (say notepad), and
click on the print menu item, the print dialog box opens. I have a ot of
printers installed in the machine, and one of them is an HP based
printer. So ofcource teh symbols for it’s DLLs cannot be located. I get
the modLoad error Sybol cannot b located message. But it slows down my
debugging process, as it takes a long time to laod the printers list.

Can something be done so that Windbg, ignores these modules taht are not
important to me as of now?
