Shadow Device?

Can anyone point me to an article where they discuss shadow devices?
I’ve heard the term used several times, but Google doesn’t seem to be
giving me any help. I am just curious what they are and how are they
used.

Well, it depends on the context.

There’s something called the Volume Shadow Copy Service, that we typically refer to as volume snap shots:

There’s also the concept of a “shadow device object” used in file systems / file system filters.
