Watch it folks, the resident Xenophobe is about to pontificate …
And in this corner we have another request from a code-kiddy to this group
to assist them in pirating software. I saw a neat commercial today
concerning the pirating of theatrical works (that’s movies for the
code-kiddies). The commercial basically points out that if the pirates had
no customers there just might not be a market for piracy. Gee … what a
concept. Personally, I find software pirates a bit more disgusting. Ben
Afleck ain’t going to suffer that much if he looses a few cents from his
residuals on “Dare Devil”, but Mark and Bryce could be significantly
impacted.
Hey, sweet Anthony, Mark and Bryce have the source, why don’t you ask them?
Oh … they want MONEY for it. Hell, dude, you can’t even afford an email
address, so I highly doubt you can whip out the coin it would take to
purchase a legitimate license for the source from SysInternals!!!
Of course next comes the good old argument of how knowledge should be free
and freely shared … or there’s the good old “Poor me … I’m from a 3rd
world country and deserve your pity”. First, knowledge ain’t free, and
second I talk with and help to many respectable developers from the same 3rd
world to believe that.
O enough of this … go somewhere else to mooch and beg …

DO NOT post requests to violate intellectual property laws – such as
requests for unlicensed copies or source code of software – to this forum.
A repeat violation WILL result in your being banned from OSR controlle
forums and sites.

C’mon folks, let’s not be so quick to accuse a person of this sort of thing.
There is a similar reaction just today in
microsoft.public.win32.programmer.kernel under “executing arbitrary data…” In
the present case, the original poster could have imagined that in times past
RegMon was available in source code form and that somebody might have a copy of
that. It would have sufficed to reply that RegMon is not now available from its
author in source form and that the respondent knows of no older forms
legitimately available in source.

Do you have a specific question about functionality regmon has that perhaps
we could answer?

I noticed sources for both Filemon and Regmon utilities aren't
available as
previously. Is it intentional or an omission?
It is quite understandable; I remember many posts in both ntdev and ntfsd
list "I modified filemon / regmon driver and want...". It's a pity because
sources were interesting and developers could learn a lot from them. I
really mean learn and not copy&paste.

This happens quite often. The same thing happened to me with my virtual

Bosse did mostly copy&past of my code and then published it under GPL. I
too removed the source from the public. What a shame.

I think most of the OSR code are genuine, invented/researched/whatever...
But copying someoneelse's effort is a criminal offense. Yes it is c o, in my
opinion.
Otherday someone mentioned half or (may be quarter) of the hurdel to become
a good
programmer is to find the links, understand, and use it. He mentioned
understand, not just c&p.
But unfortunately, may be, and
I said may be, some developers are so out of the line, they would do such a
thing like what
Jamey explained ... For them, they might be more successful if they try to
be profession mugger...

Why are samples needed if you own the DDK’s ? My answer is : because the MS documentation is far from complete. Functions are
described to statically and you have to puzzle around to find out how to use them, where and when. Chapters describing the design do
contain to much references, which make them hard to read and timespending. And even … if things become to difficult to explain …
a reference to a sample is made. Conclusion : without some good books from W.Oney and others, a newbie is lost in a jungle. My motto
is : if you cannot explain it in a way a “normal” intelligent man can understand it, then there is something wrong with your own
knowledge … or there is something essentially wrong with what you try to explain.
My personal opinion is, just to be honest, and not to blame anyone who feels addressed, time will never come that a well structured,
pure-technical ( no novel ) description will exist for MS products. The time that I could lick my lips on German software
descriptions lays also 20 years behind me - and that where no samples.

You are a little off in your understanding of what the DDK is supposed to
be. It is not a novice tutorial. The help files are for reference and not
a “how to” book. That is why Walter, Peter, Tony, etc. have an opportunity
to make money. They write the books that contain a tutorial with samples
and the why, wherefore, and what not to do. Mainframes came with many books
for the various parts of the computer and the software the vendor provided.
They were not tutorial but just reference. The vendor had classes to tutor
developers in the basics and then the reference books could be used to
develop software after the training. That gave the vendor more
opportunities for making money. Many mainframe vendors provided a lot of
source code for the OS and other subsystems and many programmers learned how
to write code from them.

If you know what the ZIP file is called, it’s out there on the web in
about a dozen places (according to 15 seconds with google). I also
notice that there’s no license as part of the package, or on any of the
source, simply a copyright.

Why are samples needed if you own the DDK’s ? My answer is : because the
MS documentation is far from complete. Functions are
described to statically and you have to puzzle around to find out how to
use them, where and when. Chapters describing the design do
contain to much references, which make them hard to read and
timespending. And even … if things become to difficult to explain …
a reference to a sample is made. Conclusion : without some good books
from W.Oney and others, a newbie is lost in a jungle. My motto
is : if you cannot explain it in a way a “normal” intelligent man can
understand it, then there is something wrong with your own
knowledge … or there is something essentially wrong with what you try
to explain.
My personal opinion is, just to be honest, and not to blame anyone who
feels addressed, time will never come that a well structured,
pure-technical ( no novel ) description will exist for MS products. The
time that I could lick my lips on German software
descriptions lays also 20 years behind me - and that where no samples.

Regsrc.zip dated 18 Nov 2002. I have it and it contains a readme that
restricts your usage of the program and source. Just because someone
deleted or modified that file to remove those restrictions does not actually
make the source freeware. BTW, a copyright means all rights are reserved to
the author and someone’s “cut and paste” of their source is not legal. Most
of this just depends upon how much they want to donate to the shysters.

I don't want this to turn into slashdot, where we sit around and bash
intellectual property all day. I'm a big believer of IP laws and support
them (as they support me).
But I also get very frustrated watching people ask innocent questions
and find themselves completely bashed by the frequent posters here,
something that's an every day occurrence.
It seems reasonable to me that someone ask if there are copies of source
to something that's -been released by the author- to the Internet. Mark
let it go, and did so with a very unrestrictive license. Owning a
copyright doesn't automatically allow you to change the terms of the
license after it's been released.
For the record, the README that is included in the ntregsrc.zip that *I*
downloaded from ntinternals.com on November 2, 1998, has the following:
This software is provided "as is", without any guarantee made as to its
suitability or fitness for any particular use. It may contain bugs, so
use of this tool is at your own risk. We take no responsibility for any
damage that may unintentionally be caused through its use.
You may use the source in commercial applications without fee, however
any software distributed based on Regmon must have significant added
value in functionality over what is present here. For example, you
cannot distribute or sell a Registry Monitor based on this code, though
you can distribute and sell a product that uses Registry monitoring to
capture changes made during a software installation in order to perform
an automatic uninstall.
"
This hasn't been modified by anyone. It was burned onto a CD the day I
downloaded it, it appears.

Why are samples needed if you own the DDK's ? My answer is : because the

described to statically and you have to puzzle around to find out how to
use them, where and when. Chapters describing the design do
contain to much references, which make them hard to read and

My personal opinion is, just to be honest, and not to blame anyone who
feels addressed, time will never come that a well structured,

Yes, I agree that DDK’s are not novice documents. On the contrary, I would like to find the courses from MS that do explain how to
write drivers or in general, MS software at all. Books written by non MS people are welcome, not only to help clarify and extend,
but also to describe more details for those “advanced” that want to look more inside the OS’s. I personally liked very much the
"Undocumented … " series once published by the Addison Wesley Company.
To be be exact, about my reference : I was referring to the software developed by Siemens AG in the mid 1980’s for their digital
public telephony exchanges ( EWSD ). It was build around a mulitiprocessor system ( 5 x 68000 ) with a lot of pheripheral modules
with each a 8086 on board ( compare it to a PC card with a embedded microcontoller ). All hardware and software were dedicated and
home made, even the compiler, linker and a lot of management tools to accompagny the development. Language used : CHILL = “CCITT
High Level Language” , something based on Pascal.
The OS that served the multiprocessor did multi-processing and was preemptive. … In fact, I never did mainframe software

Sorry, but asking an innocent question is far from asking for an email copy
of copyrighted source. Before I hit send on my post I googled and region and
found that Mark and Bryce still held the copyright on it. That placed
Anthony’s request for someone to email him the source in the same category
as a boosted cable box or an illegal copy of “Titanic”. Fruits of the
poisonous tree taints the entire barrel of apples.
Anthony did not ask for a link to a site, he asked for the source. He did
not ask how things were done in the source, he asked for the source. He did
not even ask if the source was still available, he asked for the source.
Unless he personally asked that of the copyright owners I find that illegal
and personally objectionable.
I disagree Steve … by far more than the fairshare of innocent questions on
this list are given decent answers. On several attempts I have attempted to
re-write the question in better English so that the OP could get an answer,
even though I did not have the answer. This not an innocent question.
