Regarding x64 environment

Hi All,

I am new to 64-bit windows.
I am having a few queries related to this.

  1. WinDbg that i am having is 32-bit executable. When i tried to debug a
64-bit binary using it, i could not see the behavior as i was expecting. In
short i was not able to debug that process. It just sent an BreakIn and
waited for 30sec and after that it timedout.
Is there any seperate version of WinDbg for 64-bit.
  2. There were 2 ProgramFiles folders in my system drive.
    a) Program Files
    b) Program Files (x86)
My silent Installer although 64-bit, after installation got placed in
ProgramFiles(x86), whereas another similar installer got placed in
ProgramFiles. Why is this thing different. in other words, how these 2
    differ from each other.

Thanks alot.

Shreshth

Hi, Shreshth

  1. Yes, there is a separate version of x64 debugging tools (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/install64bit.mspx)
  2. Program Files (x86) folder used for legacy 32-bit programs, Program Files
  • for x64.

Hi Dmitry,

Thanks for your reply.
But i m still having one doubt.

I had build my binaries and MSI with -amd64 options and got the correct MSI
from AMD64 folder. Even after that how is it getting into ProgramFiles
(x86), whereas a simliar installer from another vendor got into Program
Files.

Is there any specific option or flag to be set for it. Am i missing
something.
Thanks alot.

Shreshth
