RE: WDK 7600: So far, so good.

So what do developers who develop on 64 bit XP do? The WDK will not install
on 64 bit XP.

I just installed WDK 7600. When started, WinDbg checbox was checked.
When unchecked, new task for removing it was added. So I left it checked and
it seems my current WinDbg installation was left unchanged.

It is better than before but still not-so-smart and a bit counter-intuitive.
Is it so hard to find out WinDbg was installed separately and ignore it in
this case?

I had everything uninstalled, but it left the start menu stuff. So
not even a clean uninstall.

Out of curiousity, have you confirmed this with the RTM? I haven’t had a
chance to yet, but I definitely had severe issues trying to get 7100
installed. I did eventually get it to install with the help of a chainsaw,
chicken (god rest its soul), and hex editor but I was hoping for an easier

I just tried to install the RTM version. The relese notes explicitly state
that x64 XP is not supported. Of course, I didn’t read the release notes
until after the installation failed.

RTM release notes seem to say that XP-64 is still the red-headed step child.

Windows XP x64 is not supported as an installation platform
IA64 is not supported as an installation platform

Which makes me think back to an earlier post today that used the word
“ligature” … I can imagine a sentence or two (or graphic) using that word
& KitSetup …

Cheers,
Dave Cattley

Bummer. Well, I wanted to go to Win7 x64 anyway. Of course, I’m not sure
what kind of problems I’m going to have because the Win7 Upgrade Advisor
doesn’t run on XP x64 (but the installer does let me know that it will run
on Win7, which is good to know).

Well that is good to know. So install on a vm, zip the mess into a zip
file, archive the zip file and unzip where needed. Or just push it all
into your source code control system and install that way.

It provides a way, but it is pretty bad that Microsoft cannot fix the
install of the WDK. I filed bugs in every beta of the WDK on how bad it is,
I’ve talked to people on the team who said it needs to be fixed, but we get
this crap.

I find the fact that the RTM WDK does not install on 64-bit XP both disappointing and disheartening.

Now, I’ve got a company full of devs using 64-bit machines, most running XP, including build-lab machines, and they won’t be able to install the RTM WDK without having SNoone do his hex edit magic juju.

Does anybody wonder anymore why we get so dispirited here in the community?

I’m seriously frustrated.

Gee why would we be frustrated, I carefully trying to remove the piece of
shit from my development machine. I’ve already told my customers who were
on the fence of when to upgrade to hold off as long as possible. When the
tools do not work in the environment of the developers, when they change the
way tools work at between the release candidate and the release to their
deteriment, why would be discouraged and frustrated.

It does seem surprising, in light of the fact that installation IS
supported on Windows 2003 64-bit (right?), and there is no difference
between the two systems except for the name string.

Tim Roberts, xxxxx@probo.com
Providenza & Boekelheide, Inc.

It’s not only supported on S03 x64, it actually WORKS.

What’s so terribly disappointing is that the WDK team asks us go out of our way to test stuff for them, try things out, report bugs, keep it positive, work WITH them.

We try to do that. I *know* this problem was reported. I *repeatedly* asked what the problem was, and if the RTM WDK would be supported on XP x64.

And in return? They don’t tell us what’s going on. And, when they KNOW this is an issue for (at least some of us in) the community, not only are we offered no description of, discussion of or reason for the problem, but nobody even takes the time to give us a “heads up” that the problem won’t be fixed in RTM.

Sorry, but that’s bad. We’ve upheld our part of the bargain. The community deserves better.

Peter,

Do you understand what you are actually saying??? Your are speaking about modifying a product’s binary, which definitely violates your EULA and, in some certain entity’s opinion, is illegal…

Therefore, get ready to get accused of being a crook by the usual suspects. It is understandable that all “epithets” will get stated in capitals the way it usually happens whenever above mentioned “usual suspects” accuse someone of something …

Well, this is quite a common trend. Is there another big corp that reacts to
feedback better?

I have not even downloaded the RTM Win7 WDK.

Reason: drop of w2k support.

Sorry, w2k-built binaries from 6001.18002 are OK on Win7 32, and 2003-built - on 2008 R2 64.
