There’s probably a performance issue with multiple rings, too. Each
ring-crossing interrupt and IRETD takes a large number of cycles.
Multiplying the ring transitions by layering the system would probably
slow it way down. I have to admit, though, that I always wanted to write
an OS that used call gates and all the other cool stuff that Intel built
into the architecture.
