This is a beef of mine:
“MS quality tests” (I assume you mean tests for the Windows
Logo, right?)… do you really think they’re stringent enough to ensure
drivers don’t crash the system?
I personally wonder why such tests exist at all. Since it is clear that a
large percentage of the drivers that pass such tests have caused plenty o’
system crashes on every machine i’ve ever used. E.g. Creative still can’t
get something as trivial as a sound card driver to work reliably. Nvidia’s
graphics drivers lock up frequently, etc… all 100% HQ testsed and
certified…
And of course what is the solutionto these problems… download the
patched “uncertified” drivers.
No, I thnk the HQ testing is a big joke. Let’s face it, the people on the
labs at MS haven’t got a clue how to properly test somebody else’s driver.
The best they can do is try a few typical cases and hope it does crash or
leak memory. and that’s only if it is a driver for something “standard”.
I write drivers for high-end video effects/editing cards… if I gave the
drivers to MS they wouldn’t have a clue what to do with them.
