Re: [ntdev] Re: [ntdev] News from WinHEC: WDF Source, MVP Program, Driver Signing

I wasn’t even thinking about security issues, I was just saying that I can think of no advantage. What am I going to do with a connected fridge?

I understand all these concerns, and I’m not saying there is no danger. Well lot of your cars can be hacked. And there are programs that would understand the environment, and make decision for us. If we search, we will see lot of discussion(s) about driverless car. Sorry, that I brought this up :(. But there are lot of discussion around these current R&D. While on the other hand, there are hackers competition(s) - one such just happened in Vancouver, and someone hacked Google in two minutes ( winning $120,000 +/- prize money ). It will give you access to kernel. EndOfGame !

And there are published report for hacking any browser we can think of. Drifting around the security area for last 15 years, of course mostly in the kernel area, I’m not totally in initial phase of understanding this area. (When I said earlier, I need to run XNU/darwin, my own built on 10.6 to 10.10 - there must be reasons behind it  ).

So I would be least worried about my Fridge, seriously ! Cloud would be hacked, IoT devices would be hacked. And there would be efforts to control them. So nothing going to stop this IoT, at least I don’t see.

What I worry ( on a personal side ) is , How to grow organically. It’s a excellent way, at least for me to think out of the BOX. I got it fairly close - except I don’t know the seeds are organic or not, though there are dime a dozen claim that they are !

So for me, just take them as they come

Take a look at http://fusion.net/story/55026/this-guys-light-bulb-ddosed-his-entire-smart-house/ for a real life horror story of the IoT.

I still have a hard time seeing how having my fridge hooked into the internet is really a good idea

The internet of things does sound like fun, but even cheap things need to be paid for by someone.

Now freebsd is trying more processor supports ( from the support of some big companies). That is not to say that others like cisco iOS ( not the iphone iOS), VxWorks, or Oracle or VMware or Google or Facebook, or Tesla etc are not playing their part.

Another interesting thing is “antenna steering” that Peter had mentioned - it relies upon the concept of the adaptive change of the direction of the main lobe of a radiation pattern…

You can see a fatter target for hackers than a voting system? Election fraud and dubious practice goes back to be beginnings of elections - ever heard of a pocket borough for example? And that doesn’t even count attempts to subvert legitimate government

There are of course much better targets than my fridge

IMHO, there are already way more important stuff at stakes for well-funded hackers to have a feast on it.

So I’m not worried about voting systems or fridge or that German house on fire

As another example, I find it incredible that people are actually
talking about online voting. No, thank you. I want something physical
in my hands that can be traced. It has already been amply demonstrated
that we cannot build hack-proof systems today. Is there any target more
attractive to well-financed hackers than voting?

If you have some crooked county clerk who shuffles paper ballots off to
the side without running through the counting them, an audit team can
follow along later and run them through again to fix the problem. But
when everything is digital, what can the audit team do?

“HAL, please count the ballots again.”

“Mr. Smith, I come up with the same results. No HAL 9000 has ever
made a mistake or distorted information. By the way, I have the utmost
confidence in the mission.”
