Hm, you asked “how to distinguish the usb harddisk type on filter
driver from normal harddisk?” and I thought you’re into the type.

After IRP_MN_START_DEVICE use IOCTL_DISK_GET_DRIVE_GEOMETRY.
As a removable mass storage it should return Geometry.MediaType =
RemovableMedia
(versus FixedMedia).
A USB harddisk always comes as FixedMedia, other than memory sticks etc.

Check IOCTL_STORAGE_QUERY_PROPERTY. Either the adapter or device descriptor (I don’t remember which) will contain the type of the underlying bus (one type of which is USB)

Peter and OP …

Actually either descriptor will contain the bus type.

IOCTL_STORAGE_QUERY_PROPERTY =>
PSTORAGE_ADAPTER_DESCRIPTOR->BusType
works for W2K and XP, and
if BusType>BusTypeAta it’s hotswap
else
if BusType==BusTypeAta it COULD be PCMCIA
(and still we do not know how to expose it).

I think if you send this request to the
underlying DeviceObject it should work for
a file filter driver too.

Hi,

I can’t find out if it is hotswappable hard drives too.
It give me ATA too.
How to determine if it is a removable hard drive be it a PCMCIA hard drive,
USB hard drive or hotswappable hard drive (laptops) and fixed hard drive?

I would like to find out in file filter driver.
Is that possible?

thank you!

cheers,
vincent

Hi,

I tried it on a file filter driver and for fixed hard drive, it give me
BusType>BusTypeAta too.
Or what should be the correct bustype for fixed hard drives?

Thank You!

cheers,
vincent

I don’t know. What kind of bus is your “fixed hard drive” connected to? A
return with BusTypeAta says you adapter is an ATA bus and your “fixed disk
drive” is probably IDE.

Hi,

Yes, I am using a IDE hard disks.
So in this case it will give me BusTypeAta.
Which PCMCIA hard drives and hotswappable hard drives gave me BusTypeAta
too.l
So I cannot differentiate between these 3 hard drives.

How can I differentiate these 3 hard drives?

Thank You!

cheers,
vincent
