Brothers of the Bits UNITE!!

Shake the yoke of the Corporate oppression,
let’s see their damn profits when their screens ain’t refreshen.

They sit on their yachts demanding overtime,.
but the cheap mutha’s ain’t payin the dime.

It’s time for us all to rise up as one,
demand our fair share or their systems are done.

Let’s see what they do when their screens are all blue,
while the software brothers are saying WE’RE THROUGH!!

Oh … you mean fresh meat. The ones who ask why they can’t write to the IO
ports of their widgets from NT. That’s a bit of an oxymoron is it not? A new
graduate with driver dev knowledge that hasn’t learned that very very basic
factoid?

Well…maybe I messed up a lil bit in my definition  I meant a new graduate interested in working in driver dev, and who probably has written a one or a couple of very simple drivers ( mostly non-NT ) in school. By knowledge, I didnt mean “all-encompassing” knowledge. But yes, if the basics are not learnt right, then hey, all bets are off!

Think about that … graduates from anywhere getting driver development
jobs.

Personal opinion …

I am currently involved in a job search for my self. Every ad I see for
driver developers want a BS in computer science and at least 3, most 5,
years experience in kernel, embedded, and/or low level development outside
of the academic world. In other words … put up or shutup. Graduates need
to be looking for entry level jobs where they can deal with hardware and
assembly, because walking into a driver development arena is a setup for
failure for all but very rare exceptions. Even then I have seen some of the
exceptions code (hell I shudder when I go back and look at my own
first drivers …).

The good companies are very serious about the experience. I know this
because my BA degree is in Psychology and Religion. When I graduated from
college, you could count on one hand the instituitions that even had courses
in computer science. But… I have 30 years of experience in low level down
and dirty assembly language programming making widgets talk to framii. What
my degreee is in or what I did in college is NEVER part of an interview
dicussion. If they want to see code I have written I can show them
thousands of lines of functional code being used today. The interviewers
know that, and have on occaision asked for it.

Companies that hire graduates for primary driver development tend to think
software is developed in zero time, do not want to spend the money for
someone with experience in driver development (and we are not cheap), will
probably discard and burn the poor bastards up in the process and thankfully
do not last long.

The Rev. Little now closes his holy book and steps down from the pulpit.
Donationas and freewill gifts should be sent to Holier-than-thou, Inc…
