Does anybody know of any issues using mailslots (broadcast packets) and the
MS loopback adapter under Windows 2000?
We have a client app that displays a list of “server” applications to
connect to. The client app sends a mailslot broadcast message (using “*” as
the destination address), then listens for any replies. This app works fine
in NT4 with the MS loopback adapter, but doesn’t work under Windows 2000 –
no errors are returned — just no responses. Almost as if broadcast
mailslots are disabled with the loopback adapter under 2000.
The app works fine under Windows 2000 if a *real* adapter is installed. It
just doesn’t work if we substitute the loopback adapter.
Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks in advance…

I had a problem simular to that when doing a mailslots under 98 and windows
2k. I was trying to read a message into a buffer where the buffer size was
less than the message size. Increasing the buffer size fixed the problem.
Does this help?

I don’t know, but I’ll try it. The actual messages being sent are tiny (< 80
bytes). And the weird thing is that the mailslots work fine when I enable
the NIC hardware, but don’t work when I just use the loopback adapter. This
was not the case in NT4 where the mailslots worked in both cases.
Incidentally, this does not appear to be a problem with named pipes, which
work fine with the loopback adapter.
Thanks for the reply.
