Hi,

softice does not support all kinds of display adapters. compaq presario
models have quite a number of issues when working with softice. try using
the FULL SCREEN option instead of the window option. it works sometimes.
it may help if you suggest the display adapter you are using.

I think Windowed Mode (Universal Driver) works for Almost all kind of
adapter/monitor types. For me fulscreen shoes garbage , but windowed mode
works best.

If you send an email to xxxxx@compuware.com
mailto:xxxxx , our support guys will be glad to
tell you what to do.

There are specific issues with certain Presario drivers that seem to have
funky debug information, and with one specific Intel chip that we need to
exercise a workaround. Apart from that, video driving is a black art and
every once in a blue moon we’re surprised by some new sharp turning we
hadn’t negotiated before.

Alberto.

May I take the opportunity to ask here another question about SoftICE ?

  1. problem :

Everytime I shut down or restart my system I get a IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
when SoftICE is active. This happens at almost last moment before reboot
or power down. Is this a known problem? Is there a way to stop the NTice,
assuming that this would solve the problem ?

  1. question :

Full screen mode doesn’t work for me because my flat-screen doesn’t
support the resolution. However, I would like to change the default WIDTH
and LINES to 120 / 60. Is this possible ?

My system :

  • P4 ( 1.6 GHz )
  • AGP NVidea Riva TNT2 64 Pro
  • Windows XP Pro SP1
  • SoftICE Driver Suite 2.6

A quick answer, but I suggest you ask the guys at
xxxxx@compuware.com for more specific help:

  1. The 2.6 release doesn’t officially support WinXP SP1, and you will bump
into a few compatibility issues such as the one you describe. However,
there’s a real simple fix you can get from our support people, and they can
help you putting things together and making sure your system works.
Alternatively, you can speak to your friendly sales drone to see if you are
entitled to a free upgrade to the latest release.

One way you can bypass the issue is by pressing the Escape key at the right
time. You will get a message “Press ESC to stop loading SoftICE” or
something like that, during boot time - if you press the Escape key then,
SoftICE won’t load. Alternatively, you can configure SoftICE to come up
manually instead of at boot time, and start NTICE.SYS later in the game.

  1. If you use the standard Config dialog to add the Lines and Columns
setting to your winice.dat file, it’ll come up like that every time you
    boot.

I have run WinXP SP1 for a while, on one of my Dell systems with a TNT Riva
64. The 2.7 release fixes a number of compatibility issues that we had with
2.6. But again, we can get you an update that will go a long way towards
fixing those WinXP SP1 compatibility problems.

Hope this helps ! If not, let me know, and I’ll pull the strings a bit
harder.

Alberto.

Hello Alberto,

Thanks for the answer.

In fact I have no problem on start up or operation of my system, the BSOD
appears at shut down or restart which force me to reset my PC manually.
Of course I like to use SoftICE at boot time too ( which is my primary
goal ). Since I just started using it, it was the only trouble I had for
now.

Entering new settings for LINES and WIDTH did not have an effect. I’ve both
tried “LINES=120” and “LINES 120” syntax without success. The entries were
stored accordingly in the winice.dat after entering them in the “Advanced”
hive of the configuration tool.
I will use a SF1 key mapping ( lines 60; width 120; ). This is convenient
enough for me.

If I remember correctly, I also had this problem (BSOD at shutdown) with
2.6. It disappeared with 2.7. There were more problems with 2.6 at XP, you
should update. However, I’m not sure if there was something really serious
for single CPU machine.

LINES and WIDTH work for me; they should be inside INIT=“…” and before
final “x;”. It is better to avoid GUI and edit winice.dat directly.

Finally, it is better to solve such problems with support, they usually
respond within a day and give correct answers for simple questions and known
problems.

Thanks Michal,

Extending the INIT string does do the job. I will ask my chief

Hi, Christiaan,

One thing to watch out is that the maximum settings for LINES and WIDTH will
depend on how much memory you allocate for the video. The winice.dat setting
is called DRAWSIZE, and the default is, I believe, DRAWSIZE=2048. You need
LINES * WIDTH * BYTE_DEPTH bytes in the video memory, or it won’t take the
LINES and WIDTH settings. One thing you can do is to type SET MAXIMIZE ON at
the SoftICE command line, and see how many lines it gives you: that’ll be
the maximum your video memory setting can take.

Alberto.

Hallo Alberto,

Thansk for the hints. I’ve already noticed that I had to increase the
video memory size in my case to 4096. In the mean time, I’ve got
the version 2.7 update, which seems to solve the
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL problem at shutdown and reboot.

There is however another problem. When I start Visual Studio.NET
when SoftICE is active, the debugger pops up with a halt for a
page-fault. When trying to continue with Ctrl-D or x; , the fault page
occurs immediately again. After a lot of Ctrl-D continues
( up to 20 - 40 times ) the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL appears.
This happens on both W2000 and XP.

Note that the “page faults” do NOT occur with Visual Studio 6.0.

The version 2.6 version acts in the same way.

I run MSVC.NET in both my machines (one has Win2K, the other XP), with
SoftICE on all the time, no problem. Maybe you want to drop an email to the
xxxxx@compuware.com people ? They will be able to do a deeper
analysis and see what’s going on with your system.

I had the same experience when I installed 2.7 on an old Compaq Armada 7800
running W2K-SP3. The cause turned out to be a strange W2K display driver
configuration. The 7800 has a S3 Virge MX, but W2K had installed 2 display
drivers for it: s3mtrio and s3mvirge.

The short version of the fix was to patch SoftIce registry keys, adding
“s3mtrio” to

\HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ntice\ExcludedDisplayDrivers

and adding “s3mvirge” to

\HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ntice\InstalledDisplayDrivers

and BINGO! it worked.

I got the idea for this in the trouble shooting section of the 2.7
installation guide booklet (page 41 to be exact).
