Posting with a News Reader? Which one?

I’m trying to do some long-needed maintenance on NTDEV, and it would help me a great deal if members who are reading this list with NEWS (NNTP, a newsreader) would post a quick note to this thread – from their newsreader – to tell me which news reader they’re using.

I’m not trying to identify the RANGE of newsreaders, per se, as much as figure out why certain messages are being handled in particularly strange ways. So, even if there are already 600 posts that say “I’m using Thunderbird” I’d appreciate you posting a 601’st time saying “I’m using Thunderbird, too”.

Thanks for your help,

Peter

in order of frequency -

  1. Thunderbird
  2. Live Mail beta ( prettier GUI than TB, but ignores my setting to
always post in plain text, and has other lesser bugs)
  3. OE

I, M. M. O’Brien, do hereby declare that I use Thunderbird to post
messages, including the occasional salty one, to the ntdev, ntfsd and
even the godforsaken windbg newsgroup.

Often you can find out the newsreader software from the message headers.
Sent with Windows Mail 6.0.6000.16386.

I’m not trying to identify the RANGE of newsreaders, per se, as much
as figure out why certain messages are being handled in particularly
strange ways. So, even if there are already 600 posts that say “I’m
using Thunderbird” I’d appreciate you posting a 601’st time saying

This would seem like something mining the list itself could tell us
with much more granularity / accuracy? I don’t manage or moderate any
newsgroups myself, but I’ve seen colleagues who do moderate lists
generate reports based on their local offline (downloaded) message
databases. Simply based on the presence and content of the
“X-Newsreader” header in the message body itself. e.g. Lyndon based
on his post is using “Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.5512”.

Happy to go ask what tools happen to be in use for those reports, but
more to the point is there perhaps a list slave who could just export
their entire offline database and then just awk/parse the report
you’re looking for.

Agent 5.00/32.1171, for what its worth.

Some posts to the list are not being properly processed. I’m trying to determine if these posts are based on the user sending them or the newsreader from which they’re being posted. In order to do this, I need actual new POSTINGs from people using a variety of newsreaders. Numerous cases. Multiple exemplars. Enough postings to be able to “connect the dots” as it were. History, in this case, won’t work for a variety of reasons.

SO, yes, I realize that Alan is posting using “Forte Agent 5.00/32.1171”… But what I needed was his incoming posting to examine.

Thanks,

Am I the only one on this list who uses Web interface?

Anton Bassov

I use OE and Agent. I recently added this account to Agent when the restore
messed up the numbers. I had to resync on OE and wanted to get a quick view
of the messages. I plan to drop Agent for this newsgroup since my folders
are all in OE and it is my preferred text news reader for the ability to
keep all my chosen messages in email folders.

Yes, but there’s some danger in that. For example, I use Thunderbird to
read these messages, but I read them as a mailing list, not as an NNTP
newsgroup, even though Thunderbird is quite capable of doing that.

For me, it’s Windows Live Mail Beta, which seems to be Outlook Express
re-written in some way I don’t quite yet understand…

I’m currently signed up for email, but would prefer NNTP, and I use Forte
Agent (full, not FreeAgent)
