PCMCIA on Windows NT 4

Hi,
Here’s one for PCMCIA gurus.

I had a PCMCIA (PC) Card with a manufacturer name string, say, “ACME Inc” and
a product name string “Boolean Grey Widget”. Drivers work fine for it.

However, when I change either the manufacturer or product name string by even
one byte (for example, from ACME to ACMM) the PCMCIA configuration dialog in
Control Panel shows the device with a red X through it. The driver doesn’t work
either. Nothing else has changed - just these two strings.

The same re-labelled adapter works fine on Windows 2000 and Windows 98/Me when
used with the drivers for the original PCMCIA card. This behaviour is restricted
to Windows NT 4. Can anyone give me an idea of where to start looking?

Thanks,
Lee

Hi all,
It seems that the following addresses the matter:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q170084

Just in case someone finds themselves in the same situation and they’re searching
the list archives, Windows NT 4 keep s a list of known PCMCIA manufacturers
and their devices under HKLM\System\CCS\Services\PCMCIA\Database. You need to
add your new device here for PCMCIA.SYS to recognise your device.

Flexible, eh?
